Principal Database Consultant / Senior Database Administrator

Role Purpose

We are seeking a highly experienced Principal Database Consultant / Senior Database Administrator to design, implement, administer, optimise and support enterprise database environments across Microsoft SQL Server, IBM DB2 and PostgreSQL platforms. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the availability, performance, security and resilience of mission-critical databases while providing technical leadership and best practice guidance across multiple database technologies.

The ideal candidate will possess deep expertise in enterprise database administration, high availability, disaster recovery, performance tuning and database optimisation within complex production environments.

Key Responsibilities

1. Install, configure, administer and maintain Microsoft SQL Server, IBM DB2 and PostgreSQL database environments.
2. Design and manage Development, Test, Staging and Production database environments.
3. Implement and maintain backup, recovery and disaster recovery solutions aligned to business RPO and RTO objectives.
4. Configure and support High Availability solutions across supported database platforms.
5. Monitor database health, performance and capacity, proactively identifying and resolving issues.
6. Optimise database performance through query tuning, index optimisation, execution plan analysis and server configuration improvements.
7. Develop, maintain and optimise SQL scripts, stored procedures and database objects.
8. Configure database monitoring, alerts and automated maintenance plans.
9. Deploy database releases, patches and change scripts into production environments.
10. Manage database security, user permissions and access controls.
11. Implement and support database replication technologies where applicable.
12. Produce and maintain technical documentation for database environments, standards and operational procedures.
13. Work closely with infrastructure, application and development teams to deliver reliable and scalable database services.
14. Provide technical leadership, mentoring and best practice guidance to junior database administrators.
15. Participate in database architecture, capacity planning and technology roadmap initiatives.

Required Skills & Experience

1. Minimum 10+ years' experience in enterprise database administration.
2. Strong hands-on experience administering Microsoft SQL Server, IBM DB2 and PostgreSQL in production environments.
3. Extensive experience installing, configuring and supporting enterprise database platforms.
4. Advanced SQL development and database performance tuning experience.
5. Strong understanding of database backup, recovery and disaster recovery strategies.
6. Experience implementing High Availability solutions.
7. Experience with database replication technologies.
8. Strong knowledge of database security, permissions and governance.
9. Experience implementing proactive monitoring and automated maintenance.
10. Excellent troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills.
11. Experience supporting business-critical, high-availability environments.
12. Strong documentation, communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
