Created in 2005 by the Generalitat de Catalunya (Government of Catalonia) and the University of Barcelona, IRB Barcelona is a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence—a seal that was awarded in 2011.

The institute is devoted to conducting research of excellence in biomedicine and to transferring results to clinical practice, thus improving people’s quality of life, while simultaneously promoting the training of outstanding researchers, technology transfer, and public communication of science. Its 29 laboratories and seven core facilities address basic questions in biology and are orientated to diseases such as cancer, metastasis, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and rare conditions.

IRB Barcelona is an international centre that hosts 500 members and 45 nationalities. It is located in the Barcelona Science Park. IRB Barcelona forms part of the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) and the “Xarxa de Centres de Recerca de Catalunya” (CERCA).

IRB Barcelona is seeking a motivated scientific biomedical professional (veterinarian, biologist, biotechnologist or from a similar area of knowledge) with proven skills in molecular pathology, experimental pathology, spatial biology and image analysis to cover a position in the Histopathology Facility.

 

DUTIES: 

  • Provide expertise and drive ideas in molecular pathology, spatial biology, digital pathology solutions and methods to support Immunohistochemistry (IHC), immunofluorescence (IF), multiplex IF and in-situ hybridization (ISH) pathology studies.
    • Molecular pathology: lead the development of assays for the investigation of new targets and disease biomarkers of human diseases - antibody based immunofluorescence tissue assays (IHC, IF, multiplexing assays) and fluorescent in-situ hybridization (FISH) techniques.
    • Computerized pathology: Use of the different image analysis tools and interpretation of the tissue data. Able to build new solutions and challenges in biomedical image and spatial biology.
  • Integrate the information obtained by molecular, image analysis and spatial assays with other experimental pathology data.

 

EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS:

Must Have – Required:  

  • Experience:
    • PhD, postdoc or Master in Veterinary, Biology, Biotechnology degree or equivalent with proven experience in a laboratory of pathology, biomedicine or similar. 
    • Expertise in developing antibody based pathology assays (IHC, IF) and other molecular assays (FISH).
    • Digital pathology and Image analysis expertise.
  • Knowledge:  Biology, Anatomy, Histology, General Pathology and Molecular Pathology, Tissue Image Analysis and other related fields.
  • Skills:
    • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills
    • Proven collaboration and communication skills
    • Self-motivated, pro-activity and eager to drive innovation in the area of molecular pathology
    • Fluent English (written and oral)
    • Informatics and Statisticals skills

Desirable:

  • Experience : Experience in spatial biology Antibody immunofluorescence based assays Rodent necropsy and sample collection. 
  • Rodent necropsy and sample collection. FELASA accreditation.
  • Knowledge: Histopathology of animal models of human diseases.
  • Skills : Custom orientation.
