We are looking for a Data Architect Ontology (Ontologist and Taxonomist)

In this role you will be responsible for the design, development, and governance of semantic artefacts that enable consistent business meaning across data, analytics, and digital initiatives. The role combines classical taxonomy and ontology engineering practices with the establishment of standards, operating procedures, and best practices for enterprise-wide semantic artefact management.

This position ensures that semantic assets are scalable, reusable, and aligned with enterprise architecture, data governance frameworks, and FAIR principles.

YOUR DAY TO DAY

  • Semantic Artefact Design and Development: Design, develop, and maintain taxonomies, thesauri, ontologies, and controlled vocabularies aligned with business and analytical needs. Translate business concepts into formal semantic models using appropriate standards. Ensure semantic consistency and alignment across domains, projects, and platforms.

  • Standards Definition and Governance: Define and maintain enterprise standards for semantic artefact modeling, naming conventions, identifiers, and versioning. Establish guidelines for the use of SKOS, OWL, RDF, and related standards, ensuring interoperability and compliance. Ensure artefacts comply with internal governance frameworks and external standards where applicable.

  • Operating Model and Procedures: Design and implement operating procedures for the lifecycle management of semantic artefacts, including intake, design, validation, publication, and retirement.Establish quality assurance processes, including validation rules and acceptance criteria.

  • Best Practices and Continuous Improvement: Define and promote best practices for taxonomy and ontology development across the organization. Develop reusable patterns, templates, and design guidelines to accelerate delivery and reduce inconsistency. Continuously assess and improve semantic practices based on feedback, industry evolution, and internal needs.

  • Tooling: Support the configuration and usage of taxonomy and ontology management tools. Ensure proper interoperability with metadata management platforms, knowledge graphs, and downstream systems. Define requirements for tooling capabilities in alignment with semantic lifecycle needs. Contribute to evaluation and selection of tools supporting semantic management. Propose innovative ways to build, control, and validate semantic artifacts (e.g., through agents and AI).

WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR

  • Degree in STEM, Linguistics, or a related field. Other degrees with extensive experience or advanced training or certification in semantic technologies can be considered.

  • Strong expertise in taxonomy and ontology modeling within enterprise environments.

  • Deep knowledge of semantic web standards such as (but not limited to) SKOS, OWL, RDF, and SHACL.

  • Experience on deploying semantic artefacts using LPG storage.

  • Strong experience with metadata management, knowledge graph, or semantic tooling platforms.

  • Understanding of data governance, master data, and enterprise architecture principles.

  • Ability to formalize business concepts into structured semantic models.
