POSITION: Middle School Learning Support Specialist



STARTING DATE: August 2025 -one year position



JOB SUMMARY


We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Middle School Learning Support Specialist to join our dynamic educational team. The ideal candidate will inspire students and nurture a passion for learning. The Learning Support Specialist is responsible for supporting a differentiated learning environment that promotes academic, social, and emotional learning. The specialist works with grade level teams and individual classroom teachers to effectively teach to a range of levels and learning styles. To this end, the Learning Support Specialist carries two distinct roles: teacher and student advocate. 



PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:


Teacher



  • Design and deliver Executive Functioning, Literacy, and Math Foundations classes providing research-based remedial support as well as additional support to students in their core classes.

  • Carry out and reflect on summative assessment of student progress to track student progress, inform instruction, and provide individual feedback that furthers learning and overall self-awareness.



  • Foster inclusive, adaptive learning environments by guiding the implementation of  Universal Design for Learning.

  • Serve as a grade level advisor in the Middle School advisory program and participate as an active member of a grade level team.


Student Advocate



  • Track data and apply criteria to determine student placement in support classes .

  • Support students’ overall learning, growth and well-being and gather data to identify patterns and trends in students’ academic, social/emotional, and behavioral needs.

  • Work collaboratively with Administration and Counselor, forming a Student Support Team, to inform and document student support plans that are uniquely designed with the individual learning profiles of students in mind.

  • Facilitate communication with families, staff, and outside service providers (as necessary) to ensure the implementation of support plans both in school and at home.

  • Ensure the “pass-up” of student information between grade-levels and establish protocols that support this.


As a member of the ASM community, the Learner Support teacher is expected to:



  • Participate in and contribute to own and others’ professional development for the ongoing improvement of the educational program at ASM

  • Maintain and submit necessary records and reports for students, inventory, ordering, etc.

  • Participate in ASM’s Professional Learning Community by attending meetings, workshops, professional development programs, and other school-sponsored activities

  • Ensure appropriate safety standards are understood and followed by students

  • Support the development and maintenance of safe classroom environments

  • Become knowledgeable about emergency drills and follow correct procedures 

  • Contribute to general building supervision, discipline control for all and any students, and morning/lunch/recess duties as assigned


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:



  • Native English speaker

  • Master’s degree Educational Psychology / Special Education

  • Experience working with Middle Level students

  • Experience as a learning specialist, resource teacher, ELL teacher, or differentiation coach in an inclusive setting.

  • Excellent classroom management and instructional skills using researched based best practices.

  • Experience with literacy assessment and instruction within the workshop model. 

  • Experience with a conceptual approach to teaching math

  • Experience working in a variety of settings and with students, families, and staff from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and learning styles, and an ability to be flexible and adapt as circumstances demand.

  • Expertise in building active, collaborative classroom programs which encourage problem solving, critical thinking skills, and which develop a sense of classroom community and trust. 

  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development and improvement.

  • Dedicated participation in and contributions to schools’ professional learning communities. 

  • Cultural sensitivity and competence with living and working in an International School setting.
