Work assignments 

The position includes experimental work on the interaction between free radicals (ROS and RNI) produced by activated host cells and the intracellular effect of new antibiotics against Mycobacterium tuberculosis . Methods included are measurement of ROS and RNI via -omics methods, flow cytometry including single-cell analysis and experiments in human macrophages and in a lung tissue model. Genetic and epigenetic effects on M. tuberculosis are also a part of the project which includes bioinformatic analysis. The position will also include design and analysis of experimental data and writing of reports for publication in scientific journals. As postdoc, you will principally carry out research. A certain amount of teaching may be part of your duties, up to a maximum of 20% of working hours.

Qualifications

To be qualified for an employment as postdoc, you must have been awarded a doctoral degree or have a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree. This degree must have been awarded at the latest by the point at which LiU makes its decision to employ you. It is considered advantageous if your doctoral degree is no older than three years at application deadline for this job. If there are special reasons for having an older doctoral degree - such as taking statutory leave - then these may be taken into consideration. We are searching for a PhD in bioinformatics, molecular biology or microbiology. Documented experience and interest in bioinformatics, preferably within bacteriology and infection experiments in inflammatory cells is a requirement for the position. Practical experience of the techniques used in the lab is advantageous such as experience in both routine microbiological work and research projects in a BSL-3/P3 laboratory with mycobacteria including Mycobacterium tuberculosis The position requires you to have: Practical experience of bioinformatics, cell culture and molecular biology techniques.   It is advantageous if you have: Experience of routine work on mycobacteria in a clinical microbiology department Worked with whole genome sequencing Worked with -omics techniques (especially epigenetics, proteomics and transcriptomics) Experience of working with free radicals Experience of working with M. tuberculosis and other mycobacteria is advantageous, as is work with -omics methods including bioinformatic analysis of host response Experience of cell separation (white blood cells) The position requires good knowledge of English, both spoken and written. You are a safe and stable person with a professional approach. You work well with other people and are well-articulated, responsive and engaged in meetings with other people. Furthermore, we believe that you are structured, quality conscious and work analytically with complex issues.

The workplace

You will work at the  Division of Inflammation and Infection (II)  and belong to  Thomas Schön’s  research group. The clinical mycobacteria research group currently consists of two senior research engineers with many years of experience in the techniques used in the lab, as well as a PhD candidate and a research assistant. Within the group there are also several clinical PhD candidates and senior researchers in infectious diseases. The research laboratory is in close proximity to clinical microbiology, including the sequencing platform and BSL3 laboratory for mycobacteria. The advanced techniques used in the lab are largely developed by in house, but expanded bioinformatic competence, especially in the area of mycobacteria, would be of great value to the research group. The environment offers excellent opportunities for frontline research in the field. You will work at the  Department of Biomedical and Clinical Sciences (BKV) , which is one of the university’s largest departments with operations primarily within the Faculty of Medicine. Our goal is to conduct education and research in medicine and biomedicine, with high international quality. At BKV you will find leading research with both cutting edge and breadth within a large spectrum of modern biomedicine.

The employment

This employment is a temporary contract of two years with the possibility of extension up to a total maximum of three years.
