The adoption of data-driven methods in healthcare provides significant opportunities for the effective utilization of resources, improved planning and coordination of processes, improved diagnostics and personalized care processes.

The Department of Biomedical Engineering and Health Systems is looking for a doctoral student to work on exciting projects. The goal of the PhD is to develop a systemic basis for healthcare improvement, through data-driven methods. The student will be responsible for data analysis and building ML, AI and NLP models and pipelines for these projects. The student will collaborate with other researchers, clinicians and practitioners in healthcare.

Applicants should hold, or be about to receive a Masters Degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics or other relevant disciplines in Natural Sciences and Engineering. Experience in programming, especially Python and Databases is preferred. The candidate should have strong critical reasoning skills, with a desire to experiment and explore within complex systems, excellent knowledge of written and spoke English and the ability to work independently and within teams. The ability to collaborate and communicate with stakeholders and experts is of importance.

Supervision:Prof. Sebastiaan Meijer, Assoc. Prof. Adam Darwich and Assoc. Prof. Jayanth Raghothama is proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are made on admission

Admission requirements

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:

  • passed a second cycle degree (for example a master's degree), or
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 second-cycle higher education credits, or
  • acquired, in some other way within or outside the country, substantially equivalent knowledge

Preferred qualifications

  • Strong programming skills in Python, and other relevant languages (such as R)
  • Background in AI, machine learning, data science, statistics, preferably with a focus on both statistical methods and NLP
  • An interest for and insights in the datadriven health sector
  • Experience with visualization and working with large datasets is an added bonus
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary research environment
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • We are looking for someone who is open, collaborative, and communicative. You need to be able to work independently, actively contribute to problem solving, and to help move projects forward

In order to succeed as a doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. During the selection process, candidates will be assessed upon their ability to:

  • independently pursue his or her work
  • collaborate with others,
  • have a professional approach and
  • analyse and work with complex issues.

After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal competency.

Information regarding admission and employment

Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years ' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.In the case of studies that are to be completed with a licentiate degree, the total period of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for two years.
