Swedish Institute of Space Physics (IRF) in Uppsala is looking for a research engineer specialising in mechanical design and mechanisms Do you want to work with designing instrumentation for future spacecraft in a team at the forefront of science? The Space Plasma Physics research programme at the Swedish Institute of Space Physics (IRF) in Uppsala invites applications for a full-time position as a scientific instrument mechanical engineer. At IRF you will be part of an active tight-knit group of engineers and scientists specializing in building scientific instruments for the measurement of plasma densities, electrical fields and plasma temperature in space (for instance Cluster, MMS, Swarm, Cassini, Rosetta, Solar Orbiter, JUICE, Comet Interceptor). You will primarily work with development and documentation of mechanics for the instruments developed at IRF. This could for instance include: Design and testing of mechanisms for boom deployment on small satellites. Design of electronics boxes for space applications. Design of Langmuir probes. Setting requirements for, and reviewing the mechanical designs of, other teams in our consortium. Mechanical testing of systems for space applications. The process from idea to a finished instrument is mainly carried out at IRF together with our scientists and you will have an important role throughout the full project lifetime. Projects usually involve international collaborations, which can involve both domestic and international travels. Production of technical documentation is an important part of the work, as well as being able to verbally communicate the results of the work. Qualifications Required qualifications: Bachelors degree or higher in engineering with a focus on mechanics. Several years of work experience in mechanical design. The following is considered a merit: Understanding of materials used in the harsh space environment. Experience of designing mechanical constructions and mechanisms for use in space systems. Experience of designing small components and systems with high precision. Knowledge of material and mechanical systems testing. Due to the extensive international contacts, it is important that you can express yourself very well in both spoken and written English. The work sets high demands on independence, accuracy, initiative and the ability to solve problems in many technical areas. The ability to collaborate within the group, as well as with external parties, is a requirement. Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.
