Surgical Science is a leading provider of virtual reality simulators for medical training. Our mission is to enhance the skills of healthcare professionals through innovative and realistic simulation technology. We are now seeking a motivated student for a Master Thesis at Surgical Science.
The project:
In our surgical simulation platform, LapSim, we use 3D meshes created in modeling software like Maya to simulate soft tissues that can be manipulated and cut. Before these meshes can be used in the simulator, they must be converted into a specific format. This transformation process currently takes place offline and requires significant computational resources.
Whenever even minor local adjustments are made to the mesh, the entire process must be repeated. This results in a new topology, requiring a complete re-texturing of the object. The iterative nature of this process can make achieving optimal results time-consuming.
This thesis project aims to address this challenge by exploring solutions to minimize topology changes. The goal is to ensure that small local edits do not necessitate a complete remeshing, thereby drastically reducing processing time.
Key Objectives
Research & Exploration: Investigate existing algorithms and research in topology optimization and remeshing.
Implementation: Identify the most suitable algorithm and develop a prototype to test its effectiveness.
Evaluation: Benchmark the proposed solution against the current approach to assess improvements in efficiency and quality.
Technologies & Tools
Current Library: The current remeshing process relies on the open-source library CGAL.
Additional Tools: Familiarity with 3D modeling software (e.g., Maya) and experience with C++ or Python is beneficial.
