Job Description - Senior Construction Manager

We are looking for an experienced Sr Manager Construction for our manufacturing site in Skellefteå, Sweden. By joining us, you will be at the forefront of building up a green energy cluster from scratch, placing Northvolts Gigafactory in the heart of the Sweden’s energy transition and contribute to building one of the largest and most sustainable European battery factories.

You will be part of the Factory Program leadership team that will drive the planning, purchasing, construction and commissioning of our battery factory in Sweden. Built in multiple phases over 5+ years the factory represents a multi-billion Euro investment project. Together with your colleagues from the Program team you will be accountable to lead internal and external teams cross-functionally to deliver on company targets and in line with customer expectations.

About the job
This position’s purpose is to oversee all construction-related activities of the Northvolt Ett project from groundwork to commissioning. You embrace the project’s overall objective of safety, quality, cost and schedule.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Manage the construction execution at site, according to time and budget, under safe conditions. Your responsibilities will include the site’s general infrastructure and project logistics, the buildings, the clean and dry rooms, the utility systems, and the installation of process equipment.
  • Coordinate all contractors at site to ensure good progress and cooperation, including daily coordination meetings with team and stakeholders.
  • Direct interface with construction general contractors and discipline contractors during the bidding, award, execution, and project closeout/punch list phases.
  • Negotiate change orders throughout the execution and life cycle of the project.
  • Monitor schedule progress together with the project planner and the team, including forecasts and mitigation actions at site to get the battery plant up and running according to the overall time plan
  • You have the accountability to deliver a safe project.
  • Develop and agree on project construction goals and execution strategy while engaging the project team and fostering collaboration with external partners.
  • Establish and inspire an inclusive on-site working culture while ensuring execution quality during all project phases considering environmental protection, process and occupational safety until successful completion and acceptance of project deliverables

We would like to see that you easily find the right balance between strategic and hands-on leadership. You should be able to resolve daily issues on site, but at the same time you keep the helicopter perspective in sight to drive the overall project success.

We believe that you have:

  • A degree in Engineering, Construction Management or equivalent
  • Experience from the Swedish/European construction industry, permitting and regulation
  • At least 10-15 years of experience in construction of mega-scale, complex industrial projects
  • Inspiring leadership skills and the ability to motivate and guide people through a greenfield construction project
  • Successful track record of leading and growing large multi-cultural and interdisciplinary teams with ambitious timelines and goals.
  • Leadership with the capability to make the right decision at the right time.
  • Ability to resolve complex problems and be comfortable with ambiguity.
  • Ability to build relationships with contractor organisations and influence them to perform
  • Commercial acumen and experience from handling large complex contracts

  • Excellent English written and oral skills

Bonus points for:

  • General understanding of contract law and claim management.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements, including permitting.
  • Intercultural experience and competence are preferred.
