Job Description - Beam Instrumentation & Electromagnetic Simulation Specialist (SY-BI-BP-2025-57-LD)

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description

Introduction

Are you an Electronics engineer or Applied physicist with a passion for the simulation and design of electromagnetic sensors, and cutting-edge technology?

Join CERN’s Future Circular Collider (FCC) project and play a pivotal role in designing state-of-the-art beam position monitoring systems. You will harness your expertise in electromagnetic simulation to develop and optimize precision instruments that ensure beam stability at the forefront of particle physics.

You will join the Accelerator Systems Department (SY) which is responsible for the beam-related technical systems of the CERN accelerators. The SY teams design, build and operate equipment systems in all CERN accelerators, and are engaged in ambitious forward-looking R&D programmes.The position will be in the Beam Position Measurement Section of the Beam Instrumentation Group (BI-BP).

Functions

 As a specialist, you will:

  • Perform electromagnetic simulations to support the design and optimisation of Beam Position Monitor (BPM) sensors;
  • Participate in the definition of the architecture of the FCC BPM system;
  • Model the proposed architectures and estimate their performance, using analytical and numerical methods;
  • Test and optimise the prototype design in various accelerators at CERN and in other accelerator facilities;
  • Collaborate with R&D activities within the FCC international collaboration;
  • Supervise students and graduates.

Qualifications

Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of electronics engineering or applied physics or equivalent relevant experience in the field of electromagnetic simulation and analysis or a related field.

Experience:

Required experience

  • Proven experience in electromagnetic simulations with CST Studio Suite or ANSYS Electronics Desktop;
  • Proven experience in mathematical and numerical modelling of complex measurement systems;
  • Proven experience with analysing signals generated by electromagnetic sensors.

Desired experience

  • Knowledge of accelerator physics;
  • Experience with Beam Position Monitor systems;
  • Knowledge of radiation effects on electronics.

Technical competencies:

  • Knowledge and application of signal theory, mathematical techniques and tools;
  • Simulation, design and development of (parts of) detectors;
  • Knowledge and application of electromagnetic radiation propagation and interaction with matter;
  • Knowledge and application of collective effects, such as impedance.

Behavioural competencies:

  • Managing self: working well autonomously; taking on activities and tasks without prompting.
  • Working in teams: working well in groups and readily fitting into a team; participating fully and taking an active role in team activities.
  • Demonstrating flexibility: adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements.
