Job Description - ASSOCIATE ECONOMIC AFFAIRS OFFICER, Geneve

Org. Setting and ReportingThis position is located in the Trade Facilitation Section (TFS) of the Economic Cooperation and Trade Division (ECTD) in the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), based in Geneva, Switzerland. The incumbent is under the direct supervision of the P5, Chief of TFS, and the general supervision of the D1, Chief of ECTD. This position is temporarily available for an initial period of three (3) months with possibility of extension. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment. ResponsibilitiesWithin delegated authority, the duties of an Associate Economic Affairs Officer are likely to fall mainly into one of the three functional areas below. Economic and/or sector analysis: • Collects, evaluates, interprets, analyses statistics and qualitative socio-economic information on trade facilitation (TF) and their contribution to sustainable development, particularly in critical sectors for the digital and green transitions, and for countries with economies in transition; • Prepares briefing notes, inputs to speeches and similar material on TF in a form that is meaningful to non-specialists; • Assists in the organization and servicing of the United Nations Centre for Trade Facilitation e-Business (UN/CEFACT) Forum and Plenary. Intergovernmental support: • Prepares inputs for reports to the United Nations Centre for Trade Facilitation. Technical cooperation: • Prepares documentation for technical cooperation programmes and projects in the field of sustainable and digital TF. General: • Performs other related duties as required, including a variety of administrative tasks necessary for the final delivery of the work unit’s services; • Undertakes on-the-job and other training activities, both internally and externally. Work ExperienceA minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in economic research and analysis, policy formulation, application of economic principles in development programmes or related area is required. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat and Russian is a working language of ECE. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required and knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
