Job Description - Cataloguer

PRIMARY FUNCTION


 


To research and catalogue all lots consigned to the Geneva Jewellery sales.  To assist the Worldwide Head of Department in Geneva, the Head of Sale and specialists with coordinating sales, valuations, cataloguing and researching the property.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 


 



  • Research property including authenticity, bibliography, provenance and exhibition history for auction, and valuation using libraries, online databases, the internet and outside experts.

  • Compile relevant auction comparables for Specialist pricing meetings.

  • Proof and complete all research for cataloguing using auction standards and review with the Worldwide Head of Department and/or Specialists.

  • Work with specialists on research and provide all relevant information using auction standards for use in marketing material, valuations and proposals.

  • Catalogue property for auction and valuation using auction standards.

  • Research and write catalogue notes and other marketing material where appropriate.

  • Prepare property for property review meetings with Specialists to determine value, conditions, and marketability, and amend cataloguing to state changes.

  • Prepare condition reports and review with Specialists where appropriate.

  • Assist with catalogue production and layout, including photography coordination and copyright clearance for comparative images.

  • Liaise with jewellers and repairers for repairs, unmounting stones, etc

  • Send out special interest letters (cataloguing, provenance, expertise confirmation and approval).

  • Create detailed ‘selling packs’ using market research for all sales where relevant

  • Assist in the viewing room during sale week.

  • Assist clients at the valuation desk, via e-mail, telephone and on-site.

  • Spearhead the organisation, cataloguing and augmentation of the departmental library.

  • Act as the main specialist point of contact for departmental interns when needed.

  • Other duties as assigned by Head of Sale in Geneva


 


PROFESSIONAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE 


 



  • Minimum of 2-3 years professional experience within the Jewellery industry is essential

  • Ability to learn Phillips’ internal processes and systems 

  • Computer literate and proficient in Microsoft Office Software (Excel, Outlook, Word and PowerPoint), required. 


 


EDUCATION AND TRAINING



  • Minimum 2-3 years of experience performing similar duties in an auction house or in the jewellery trade, required


  • GIA or FGA graduate


  • Associated Jewellery qualifications, required

  • Language skills in addition to English, desirable.

  • Ability to follow relevant processes for obtaining relevant permissions/payments relating to the property

  • Punctuality and flexibility is essential (including evenings and weekends
