Job Description - Consultant Pediatric Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) - Abu Dhabi
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Consultant Pediatric Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Specialist to join a leading healthcare organization in Abu Dhabi.
The successful candidate will provide comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation planning for children and adolescents with developmental, neurological, musculoskeletal, and functional disabilities.
The role involves working within a multidisciplinary rehabilitation team to maximize each child's functional independence, mobility, communication, participation, and quality of life.
Key Responsibilities
Provide consultant-level assessment and management of pediatric patients with complex rehabilitation needs.
Develop individualized, goal-oriented rehabilitation plans in collaboration with the child, family, and multidisciplinary team.
Diagnose and manage pediatric conditions including:
Cerebral palsy
Developmental delay
Neuromuscular disorders
Spina bifida
Acquired and traumatic brain injury
Spinal cord disorders/injury
Pediatric stroke
Genetic and congenital disorders
Musculoskeletal and orthopedic conditions
Limb deficiencies and mobility disorders
Gait abnormalities
Spasticity and movement disorders
Assess and manage spasticity, dystonia, contractures, pain, weakness, and functional limitations.
Provide appropriate pharmacological and interventional management of spasticity, including botulinum toxin injections where appropriately trained and credentialed.
Perform functional assessments and recommend appropriate mobility aids, orthotics, wheelchairs, and assistive technologies.
Assess gait, posture, tone, strength, balance, coordination, and functional mobility.
Coordinate rehabilitation programs involving:
Physiotherapy
Occupational therapy
Speech and language therapy
Psychology
Orthotics and prosthetics
Rehabilitation nursing
Social work and other allied health professionals
Monitor functional progress and modify rehabilitation goals and treatment plans as required.
Provide comprehensive counselling and education to parents and caregivers.
Coordinate care with pediatricians, pediatric neurologists, orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, and other relevant specialists.
Support transition planning for adolescents moving from pediatric to adult rehabilitation services.
Participate in multidisciplinary case conferences and rehabilitation team meetings.
Maintain accurate clinical documentation and ensure appropriate follow-up.
Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement, research, and continuing medical education.
Support teaching, supervision, and mentoring of residents, junior physicians, and allied health professionals.
Required Qualifications
MBBS, MBChB, MD, or equivalent medical degree.
Recognized postgraduate qualification in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation / Rehabilitation Medicine.
Additional fellowship or formal training in Pediatric Rehabilitation is highly desirable.
Recognized Board Certification or equivalent specialist qualification.
Valid UAE professional license or eligibility for licensing in Abu Dhabi.
Experience
Significant post-specialty experience at Consultant level in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation.
Strong experience managing pediatric rehabilitation patients with complex neurological, developmental, and musculoskeletal conditions.
Demonstrated experience in pediatric spasticity management is highly desirable.
Experience with botulinum toxin treatment and other rehabilitation interventions is an advantage.
Experience working within a multidisciplinary pediatric rehabilitation or tertiary-care setting is preferred.
