Role purpose


 


The purpose of this role is to promote high-quality teaching and support effective learning of English across all teaching activities. The role also contributes to the design, delivery, and review of adult English programmes and services at the centre.


In addition, the role supports the implementation of the Burma Teaching Centre’s strategy and objectives. This includes helping to meet learner numbers and impact targets, while strengthening the British Council’s reputation in Burma as a trusted and expert provider of English Language Teaching.



Job Overview


 


This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Teacher or Coordinator to develop skills in academic management and customer service, while supporting product and business delivery. As part of the Teaching Centre management team, you will work closely with the Adult Senior Teacher and the Operations, Sales, and Customer Management teams to ensure high-quality teaching, learning, and services.


You will mainly teach adult learners from elementary to upper-intermediate levels, across General English, IELTS preparation, and Professional Business Skills courses. Teaching takes place both face-to-face and online, seven days a week, at the Yangon Teaching Centre. You may occasionally support Young Learner courses if needed. The centre has a strong focus on professional development, and you will be expected to attend and deliver training, as well as support teachers through observations and line management.


 


 


Main Accountabilities 


 


This role supports the British Council’s global English strategy by ensuring high-quality teaching and services for adult learners. It includes developing adult courses, delivering teaching to ELT standards, meeting learner needs, completing administrative tasks accurately, and maintaining positive relationships with students and colleagues. The role also involves ongoing professional development, sharing best practices, and supporting promotional and educational activities when required.


In addition, the role works closely with the Academic Management, Sales, Customer Management, Operations, and Library teams to deliver a consistent and high-quality learning experience, both face-to-face and online. This includes maintaining teaching quality standards, developing training and teaching materials, and supporting wider services and events that promote and strengthen the centre’s teaching offer.


 


 


Qualifications and Experience


 


Essentials


 



  • Undergraduate Degree.

  • Cambridge CELTA or Trinity Certificate TESOL.

  • Cambridge DELTA or Trinity Diploma TESOL or equivalent as recognised by the British Council. (At least two modules of a diploma in EFL completed and passed, one of which must be the teaching component (DELTA Module 2 / Trinity DipTESOL Unit 4)

  • 2 years full-time post certificate (i.e. CELTA or Trinity certificate TESOL) experience gained from teaching a variety of age groups and levels of young learners and adults, minimum 1200 hours

  • Note that a minimum of 1200 hours of experience should have been gained from teaching the following age groups

    • Adult (General English) 1500+ hours

    • Exam Preparation 300+ hours




 


Desirables


 



  • TYLEC or YL extension to CELTA

  • Relevant postgraduate qualification (MA) (TESOL, Applied Linguistics, Education, etc.)

  • E-moderation certification

  • Recognised diploma in EFL (i.e. DELTA or Trinity DipTESOL)


 


Salary and Benefits


 



  • Salary: USD 1,305 + supplement (GBP 645), – USD 1,711 + supplement (GBP 725) per month, depending on experience and qualification

  • Annual leaves: Annual leave of 35 plus Myanmar Public holidays

  • Accommodation allowance: USD400 per calendar month for an unaccompanied employee or an employee with a partner (couple), or USD535 per calendar month for an accompanied employee with child(ren) 

  • Travel Allowance: Flight cost will be sponsored for the incoming and at the end of the fixed term contract of employment with British Council Myanmar 

  • Baggage allowances:  Up to £1,200 for unaccompanied employees / up to £2,000 for employees accompanied by family members. 

  • Settling Allowance: Entitled to a settling-in allowance equivalent to two weeks’ salary for single employees, or three weeks’ salary for employees accompanied by family members, to help you to meet your initial expenses on first arrival in Myanmar:

  • Please note that this is not an employment opportunity directly with the British Council.  You will be employed by a reputable third-party agency in Myanmar who are able to provide you with a Myanmar work visa. You will work exclusively in the British Council Teaching Centres in Yangon.  


 


 


Important Information


 



  • Contract Duration: 24 Months

  • Contract Hours: 37.5 hours/week

  • Work Schedule: Teaching on average between 12-18 hours a week up to a maximum of 24, dependent on business and operational needs

  • Local restrictions on employment: Applicants must have the right to work in Myanmar. Candidates are expected to have researched whether they have the right to live and work in the country in which the role is based. Given that our offices have different legal statuses depending on the work we do in those countries, we recommend that you contact HR in the country for additional information on the likelihood of securing a visa.In order to meet entry visa requirements, the post holder must have at least 6 months to run on their passport at the time of their appointment, with at least 6 clear pages of which 3 should be consecutive to accommodate visas.
