Job Description - Academic Liaison Librarian

We have an exciting opportunity to work within our prestigious Higher Education client based in Uxbridge.

Role: Academic Liaison Librarian

Duration: currently temporary until the end of October 2025

Location: Uxbridge - 100% site based

Hours: Monday to Friday - 9am to 5pm

Job spec:

The Academic Liaison Librarian approach to supporting academic departments has been seen by the University as an effective model for central service support of academic activities. Each department has a dedicated librarian responsible for developing collections, providing information literacy and digital skills training, offering specialist reference and research support and acting as a channel of communication between the Library and the Directorate. Academic Liaison Librarians therefore play a crucial role working simultaneously as part of the Library and as part of academic departments within the University, to identify and address the library and information needs of staff and students. Academic Liaison Librarians play a key role in ensuring that the Library meets its strategic aims of close integration with the teaching, learning and research processes within the University and embedding information and digital literacy within the curriculum. It is a high profile role within the Library service and requires excellent teaching and communication skills, in addition to familiarity with specialist electronic resources and professional information management issues

To promote and support Library programmes and initiatives within academic Departments, working closely with other stakeholders. * To promote understanding of the complex and evolving collection management landscape and its implications for reading list, wider resource provision, academic freedom and the long term health of the academic publishing environment * To provide systematic feedback from Departments to the Library Leadership team and others where appropriate. * Promote an understanding of bibliometrics and citation analysis and their role in the research environment (working with the Scholarly Communication and Rights team). * To represent the Library Service on external peer groups, SCONUL, user groups, subject-based librarian associations, etc.

To respond to enquiries and requests for information support both remotely and within the Library, and take responsibility for specialist enquiries within the roleholders specific areas of subject expertise. To help other members of staff to respond to enquiries by providing appropriate support and training. * To provide leadership for the subject resources, research and teaching in a named discipline area.

With Line Manager support, establish and implement KPIs to measure service quality and impact. * To take a proactive role in assessing user needs and expectations, using data and analytics, working with other Library staff to ensure these are known and met as far as possible. * To continuously strive to improve the services available for both on and off-campus users.

Essentials:

Education to degree level or equivalent A qualification in Library/Information studies or equivalent A teaching qualification e.g. FHEA, AHEA Chartered membership of a relevant professional body, e.g. CILIP E E D D Experience Experience of subject liaison and/or enquiry work in an academic Library Recent experience of working in a customer-focused environment Experience of managing book/subscription budgets and acquiring resources Experience of producing engaging online content Experience of research support and bibliometrics E E E D D Knowledge and Skills Familiarity with a wide range of electronic and print resources used in a University Library for teaching and research An understanding of the principles underlying effective teaching and learning and the ability to apply these principles to the teaching of information literacy Understanding the needs of student and academic staff and willingness to meet them, where possible Effective written and oral presentation skills Effective teaching skills, including the ability to teach large groups of students in person/online Effective interpersonal skills including the ability to form effective working relationships with academic and nonacademic staff at all levels Excellent IT skills with knowledge of appropriate learning technologies Attention to detail, plus the ability to prioritise conflicting demands and workload appropriately Problem-solving and lateral thinking
