Job Description - Assessment Social Worker - South Tyneside

Assessment Team - Children's Social Worker


Location: South?Tyneside, Tyne and Wear


Pay Range: £24.95-£32.87 per hour


Role Overview


Join South Tyneside Council's Assessment Team in Children's Services to lead on safeguarding assessments and early interventions for children at risk. You will work alongside families and multi-agency partners to investigate concerns, evaluate risks, and support the welfare and development of children.
Key Responsibilities

  • Referral Intake & Triage

Receive and prioritise referrals; initiate statutory Section?47 and Children in Need assessments in compliance with national timelines

  • Comprehensive Assessments

Undertake in-depth needs and risk evaluations-considering physical, emotional, mental health, education, housing, finances, family dynamics, and potential abuse

  • Strengths-Based & Child-Focused Work

Ensure the child's views and wellbeing are central to the assessment, with direct engagement, observations, and age-appropriate communication

  • Care & Support Planning

Develop, implement, and review care plans addressing identified needs and risks; coordinate services and monitor child progress

  • Multi-Agency Collaboration

Liaise with police, health, education, and youth justice services; participate in safeguarding meetings, child protection conferences, and court hearings

  • Documentation & Reporting

Maintain accurate case records, write assessments and court reports, give professional evidence if required

  • Workload Management

Manage a capped caseload (typically up to 16 cases); organise competing priorities, attend to visits, visits deadlines, supervisions, and emergencies

  • Reflective Practice & Development

Access regular high-quality supervision and professional development; engage with continuous learning, reviews, and team meetings


Essential Requirements

  • Qualification: Degree in Social Work or equivalent, with professional registration (Social Work England / HCPC).
  • Experience: Statutory children's safeguarding and assessment experience, including Risk and Section?47 assessments.
  • Legal Knowledge: Strong understanding of Children Act 1989, current statutory guidance, child protection procedures.
  • Skills: Excellent analytical, report-writing, decision-making, and communication abilities.
  • Personal Attributes: Resilience, empathy, non-judgemental approach, professional boundaries, and self-care awareness.

Desirable

  • Post-qualification experience in an assessment- or safeguarding-focused local authority team.
  • Familiarity with case management systems and information-sharing protocols.
  • Capacity to provide structured support for newly qualified or trainee social workers.
