Benefits Assessor

Barnsley Council are seeking a dedicated Benefits Assessor. This role involves carrying out assessments for free school meals, various types of housing benefits, and council tax support, including areas of subsidy loss and discretion. This position is crucial for maintaining high standards of customer service and ensuring the efficient handling of financial assessments and records.

• Assess claims for Council Tax Support, Free School Meals, and Housing Benefits.
• Contribute to the recovery and enforcement of council debts, including council tax, non-domestic rates, and overpaid housing benefits.
• Respond to, investigate, and resolve complex queries and complaints, maintaining a focus on customer satisfaction and keeping stakeholders informed of progress.
• Maintain accurate and confidential records using specialist systems for Benefits, Taxation, and Income.

• Must have experience in working in Benefits and Taxation and aware of Benefit legislation. Must also have experience in Council Tax input.
• Strong understanding of council tax, non-domestic rates, and benefits systems.
• Excellent communication and customer service skills, capable of handling difficult situations.
