Chief Accountant

We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Chief Accountant to join a local authority in the Home Counties on an interim basis. This role will provide vital cover while a permanent appointment is being made.

Key Responsibilities:

• Ensure compliance with all relevant financial regulations, including the Local Government Finance Act, IFRS, and statutory accounting standards.
• Prepare timely and accurate financial statements and reports for internal and external stakeholders, including the Statement of Accounts, budget monitoring reports, and ad-hoc financial analyses.
• Manage and mentor a team of finance professionals, promoting a culture of continuous improvement through guidance, training, and development.
• Act as the primary point of contact for internal and external auditors. Lead preparation for audit processes and ensure audit recommendations are implemented effectively.
• Contribute to the development of long-term financial strategies and policies, working collaboratively with other departments and senior leadership.
• Provide expert financial advice to senior managers, elected members, and other stakeholders to support strategic decision-making across the borough.

Essential Skills and Qualifications:

• ACA, ACCA, CIMA, or equivalent professional qualification.
• Extensive experience in a senior financial role, ideally within the public sector or local government.
• Strong technical knowledge of local government finance, statutory accounting, and reporting requirements.
• Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to influence and support stakeholders at all levels.
