This varied and rewarding role offers the opportunity to make a direct impact on public health, environmental protection, consumer safety, and community wellbeing across the Council District. The successful candidate will work closely with the Senior Environmental Health Officer to deliver high-quality regulatory and advisory services while ensuring compliance with statutory and legislative requirements. Key Responsibilities As Environmental Health Officer, you will: Carry out inspections, investigations, audits, and enforcement activities across a range of Environmental Health functions. Investigate complaints and respond to public enquiries within agreed service standards. Undertake sampling programmes, surveys, and interpret results to determine appropriate action. Assess Planning and Building Control applications, providing professional advice on environmental and public health impacts. Prepare reports, business cases, witness statements, and attend Council or Court proceedings where required. Liaise with elected members, contractors, statutory agencies, community organisations, and other stakeholders. Support environmental health projects and emergency response activities. Deliver training sessions, educational talks, and health promotion initiatives. Assist in mentoring students, trainees, and new employees. Contribute to service improvement, policy development, and regional working groups. Areas of Responsibility The postholder may work across a range of Environmental Health disciplines, including: Food Safety Tobacco Control Health & Safety at Work Consumer Protection Public Health Housing Environmental Protection Planning Consultation Health & Wellbeing Enforcement of Byelaws What We're Looking For We are looking for an enthusiastic and proactive individual with: Strong investigative and problem-solving skills Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement abilities Sound knowledge of Environmental Health legislation and enforcement practices The ability to work independently and as part of a team Strong report writing and evidence-gathering skills A commitment to continuous professional development and service excellence Essential Requirements Full current driving licence and access to transport, or access to transport sufficient to meet the requirements of the role Ability to work across the Newry, Mourne and Down District Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and upholding Council values and policies Why Join Us?
