Job Description - Environmental Health Officer (Food Safety)

Positive Employment is currently recruiting for a Environmental Health Officer for our client a local government organisation in Bournemouth.

The successful candidate will work through a backlog of unrated food hygiene inspections. They will also be asked to assist with follow-ups for on non-respondents from our D/E category intervention programme, undertaking food hygiene inspections as applicable.

This role is a 4 month initial contract with the possibility to extend. This role is hybrid working.

Duties and Responsibilities but not limited to:

  • Carry out reactive and proactive enforcement work within professional area and within the business unit’s system for prioritising inspection risks.
  • Take a lead in addressing allocated complex and high profile enforcement matters within specialist area, including investigating, interviewing, making recommendations, and reporting.
  • Attend and present as required at official meetings, represent the organisation in liaison with external bodies and partnerships in respect of specialist area.
  • Prepare reports and guidance on behalf of the service unit and the organisation, including legal reports for prosecution and specialist reports in relation to area of expertise.
  • Deal with allocated media and elected Member queries, with particular reference to area of expertise, including high profile specialist issues when these arise, advising the organisation’s PR team, and through them addressing the media direct as required.
  • Maintain, enhance and develop own area of expertise, keeping abreast of new legislation and taking the lead on advising Managers and the wider organisation as required on developments.
  • Use best practice in taking and keeping evidence, making records, giving statements, giving evidence and making representation in the Law Courts and before the organisation's Bodies.
  • Maintain and update the organisation's enforcement database records appropriately.
  • Contribute to the development of new, and to review existing, working practices and procedures in relation to professional specialist area.

Personal Requirements:

  • Fully qualified and competent to inspect the full range of rating categories.
  • Either a graduate, or possessing an appropriate post-graduate qualification, in one of the main professional regulatory functions i.e. Environmental Health, Licensing, Planning or Trading Standards.
  • Minimum of 2 years experience working in the specific field of work that relates to the relevant specialism.
  • General enforcement competency and background, thorough understanding of legislative interpretation and legal/court processes.
  • Experience in the routine handling of customer driven work and delivery of customer satisfaction.
  • Experience in addressing formal meetings, including delivering presentations and giving evidence in court.

Working Hours: 37hrs / 9:00am - 17:00pm / Monday to Friday

Pay: £40.00 per day

Please note this role is within the scope of IR35.
