Environmental Protection Team Manager
Purpose of Job
To actively and effectively manage the day to day operation of the Client’s Environmental Protection Team in accordance with the Client’s decisions, Scheme of Delegation, Standing Orders and Financial Regulations and operational policies and procedures and to develop the Service in accordance with the policies, practices, priorities and standards set by the Client.
To manage the effective delivery of the following statutory functions delivered by the team:
- Investigation of statutory nuisance
- Regulation of pollution control from industrial premises
- Regulation of Clean Air Act
- Regulation of Private Water Supplies
- Local Authority Air Quality Work
- Contaminated Land
- Consultee to Licensing
- Consultee to Planning Department
To ensure the delivery of high quality, customer focussed, cost effective service by creating a high performing service and people-focussed culture through effective people management, team, inter service/directorate and, where appropriate, partnership working. To be responsible for the efficient execution of the range of duties and commensurate with the professional competence of a qualified Environmental Health Officer (EHRB registered).
Service Responsibilities
- To be responsible for the efficient execution of the range of duties reasonably requested of and commensurate with the professional competence of a qualified Environmental Health Officer and to be Corporate Member of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health
- To attend Council, Committees ,working groups and other meetings with outside bodies as required, as a representative of the client /service and if necessary report thereon
- To prepare proofs of evidence / reports and attend and present same to Courts, Tribunals, Planning Appeals and Public Enquiries as an expert witness.
- To represent the Client and Service by providing interviews and statements to the media as required.
- To prepare materials for and deliver talks, lectures and presentations (within the Client and externally) as requested.
- To prepare and support clients bids to outside bodies for financial support and to implement manage and report the initiatives as required
- To undertake visits and inspections in relation to Environmental Health matters, prepare reports, initiate and take appropriate regulatory action on such matters.
- To undertake work out of normal office hours and at weekends as necessary for the efficient execution of the duties of the post
- To participate in the Department’s out of hour’s emergency standby service if required.
- To be aware of and up to date with the legal and technical developments in relation to the Division’s functions and specifically within the field of your specialist responsibility.
- To work at other locations and in other divisions of the service as may reasonably be required.
- Leading and responsibility for both income generation and capital spending
- To approve applications for covert surveillance operations and issue cautions to offenders
The role can be undertaken part-time or full-time (18.5 to 37 hours per week) with hybrid working—2 days remote and 3 days based at Castle House, Newcastle

Rate of Pay
PAYE: £45.24
Umbrella: £56.94 per hour
