Estates Officer/Lead Engineer - NHS Foundation Trust

Location: London

Salary: Competitive

Contract Type: Full-Time ongoing temporary (1 year+)

We are pleased to be working in partnership with a respected NHS Foundation Trust in London to recruit an experienced and proactive Estates Officer. This key position offers the opportunity to directly contribute to the safe and efficient operation of hospital infrastructure, ensuring a high-quality environment for patients, visitors and staff.

Role Overview

As Estates Officer, you will oversee a wide range of building and engineering services across a complex hospital estate. This includes reactive and planned maintenance as well as urgent operational support. You will take a hands-on approach, supervise junior staff and contractors, and assist the Head of Estates and management team. The role also includes responsibility for compliance, infrastructure upgrades, and supporting service innovations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver planned, reactive, and emergency maintenance across building systems such as HVAC, BMS, fire detection, medical gases, lifts and more
  • Lead and mentor trade staff and trainees, ensuring high standards and safe working practices
  • Act as Authorised Person/Responsible Officer for designated services
  • Liaise with internal departments and external contractors to coordinate infrastructure and capital works
  • Maintain accurate documentation using CAFM and CAD systems
  • Promote Health & Safety compliance, undertake risk assessments, and manage permits to work
  • Provide technical advice and report on estate-related developments and improvements
  • Take part in fire and incident teams with physical readiness and operational resilience
  • Support service management and deputise where required

Essential Qualifications and Experience

Candidates must demonstrate the following:

  • A good standard of general education
  • Relevant HNC/HND/Degree or equivalent experience
  • Completion of a recognised City & Guilds trade apprenticeship or substantial on-the-job experience
  • Post-apprenticeship experience in engineering maintenance
  • Hospital engineering qualification(s) in ventilation, water systems, lifts, medical gases or sterilisation
  • A number of years working within a maintenance environment
  • Proficient in the use of tools, machinery and diagnostic equipment
  • High awareness of Health & Safety standards
  • Experience in demand-led service provision, issuing permits and working to strict deadlines

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

  • Additional hospital engineering qualifications
  • Recognised supervisory or management certification
  • Health & Safety qualification (e.g. IOSH, NEBOSH)
  • Prior experience managing a multidisciplinary estates team within healthcare
  • Experience working within a large organisation

Skills and Attributes

Essential:

  • Strong manual dexterity and physical fitness
  • Ability to work independently with a logical and methodical approach
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
  • Computer literacy across current operating systems and software including CAFM and BMS
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve faults in complex systems
  • Sound knowledge of engineering maintenance and Health & Safety legislation
  • Empathy for patients and sensitivity when working in clinical environments
  • Flexibility and willingness to work in challenging environments including heights, confined spaces and adverse conditions

Desirable:

  • Self-motivated and confident in decision-making
  • Ability to handle pressure and work effectively in fast-paced situations
  • Experience or understanding of allied trades
  • Evidence of self-development or career advancement
