Job Description - Family Support Worker

Role Overview

This position is part of South Manchester’s evolving Family Help model, aiming to provide targeted, intensive support to families through multi-agency collaboration. The goal is to ensure families receive the right help at the right time from the most appropriate professionals.

This is a full-time role, working 7.25 hours per day, five days per week (36.25 hours total). The role requires a full UK driving licence and access to a personal vehicle, as travel to family homes and community venues is a key part of the job.

Main Priorities

  • Conducting holistic assessments of family needs.
  • Coordinating multi-agency support plans.
  • Building restorative relationships with families.
  • Supporting families through challenging circumstances to achieve positive, sustainable outcomes.

Key Duties

  • Manage a caseload of families with complex needs.
  • Deliver evidence-based interventions in collaboration with professionals and families.
  • Conduct risk assessments and develop family help plans.
  • Use direct work to capture children’s voices and include them in planning.
  • Maintain regular contact with families in their homes or community settings.
  • Empower families through strength-based, solution-focused approaches.
  • Ensure plans are culturally sensitive and inclusive.
  • Maintain accurate records using electronic systems.
  • Support team leaders in delivering the Family Help model effectively.

Qualifications and Development

  • Level 3 qualification in a relevant field (e.g., Health, Education, Social Work).
  • Level 2 safeguarding training.
  • Ongoing professional development commitment.

Experience and Knowledge

  • Experience using tools like GCP2, CSE/CCE, and DASH.
  • Understanding of adverse childhood experiences and the trio of vulnerabilities (mental health, substance misuse, domestic abuse).
  • Knowledge of child development, positive parenting, and safeguarding.
  • Experience in multi-agency collaboration and case management.
  • Awareness of GDPR and inclusive practices.

Skills and Abilities

  • Able to work independently, including lone working.
  • Resilient and solution-focused in challenging environments.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft 365 and case management systems.
  • Able to prioritise, multi-task, and meet deadlines.
  • Skilled in building trusting relationships with diverse families and professionals.
