Assistant Engineer - Flood Risk Management
  • Location: Manchester
  • Job Type: Full-time
  • Hourly rate: £40 per hour
  • Length of role: Initial 6 months

Join Manchester City Council's Highways Service in the Neighbourhoods Directorate as an Assistant Engineer specializing in Flood Risk Management. This role offers a unique opportunity to lead technical projects and initiatives, ensuring high-quality service delivery in line with organisational objectives and statutory requirements. You will play a crucial role in managing the city's flood risk and contribute to the Greater Manchester Transport Strategy 2040.

Day-to-Day of the Role:
  • Undertake the role of Assistant Engineer / Planning Application Assessor within the Flood Risk Management team.
  • Manage a caseload of minor development planning applications, providing technical responses on flood risk and drainage matters.
  • Update the team GIS asset register with new survey information and other flood risk data.
  • Support the delivery of the GIS Data Screening application service, ensuring timely customer engagement and service delivery.
  • Engage developers for pre-application discussions and support the wider team in reviewing and resolving flood risk and drainage enquiries.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders and partners from other risk management authorities to support funded projects and influence planning policies.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • ONC / OND in Civil Engineering or a relevant discipline, or equivalent experience in highway, planning/construction, or environmental sectors.
  • Experience in Flood Risk Management and a strong understanding of the technical assessment process for planning applications is highly advantageous.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of transferring complex information clearly and effectively.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to assimilate complex information quickly.
  • Proficient in planning, organising, and managing time effectively.
  • Creative problem-solving abilities and sound decision-making skills.
  • Financial management skills with the ability to interpret financial data and trends.
