Job Description - Group Finance Manager

Castlefield Recruitment are partnering with the University of York on their search to recruit a Group Finance Manager on a fixed term contract until December 2026. The University of York exists for public good, combining academic excellence with social purpose. Due to an ongoing system implementation across corporate functions, the University require an experienced Group Finance Manager to support their team.

The Group Finance Manager will manage and provide professional leadership to the team of finance specialists - Group Financial Accounts. This team prepares consolidated financial forecasts, accounts and reports on performance to the University Executive Board, associated Committees and Office for Students. The Group Finance Manager leads the production of the consolidated financial forecasts, annual accounts and manages the relationships with the external auditors. There will also be opportunities to be involved in a variety of projects aimed at improving the efficiency and effectiveness of processes and procedures.

The Role

  • Manage the Group Financial Accounts team including line managing the Treasury Manager, Financial Accountant and the Senior Accountant.
  • Lead the production of group financial statements for approval by the University Board, relevant Committees and Council.
  • Oversee the production of the group annual budgets and five year financial forecasts for approval by the University Board, relevant Committees and Council.
  • Provide technical accounting advice to senior colleagues, ensuring the University applies the most appropriate accounting policies and treatments in line with accounting standards.
  • Lead the submission of financial information to the Office for Students.
  • Maintain the relationship management across a range of external service providers including the bankers, actuaries, and external auditors.
  • Maintain a network of contacts across the University, sharing techniques, best practice and experience.
  • Lead on projects within the finance department, linked to improving the efficiency and effectiveness of financial reporting, processes and procedures, and actively input to other projects on behalf of the wider University.

The Person

  • A Professional Accountancy qualification (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA)
  • Experience of providing excellent financial business partnering to senior leaders
  • Extensive knowledge of UK GAAP
  • Change Management experience would be beneficial
