Job Description - Health and Safety Manager

Do you want to practice your Health and Safety Management skills within one of Londons most renowned creative arts centres? We are delighted to be able to offer a 3 month interim Health and Safey Manager role for the Barbican Centre.

They are seeking a dedicated Health and Safety Manager to join our Buildings and Renewal Department. This role is ideal for someone with a strong background in health and safety management within a large, event-based organisation. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing expert advice and managing risks effectively across various working environments.

Day-to-day of the role:

  • Provide competent health and safety advice across a wide range of risk areas including Construction Design and Management (CDM).
  • Plan, implement, monitor, and continually improve health and safety management practices.
  • Write and update policies, standards, risk assessments, and reports considering organisational and legislative requirements.
  • Develop and review the organisation’s first aid needs assessment in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Engage with recognised Trade Unions to manage health and safety matters effectively



Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent is essential.
  • NEBOSH Health & Safety in Construction certificate or equivalent CDM qualification is desirable.
  • Chartered member of IOSH (CMIOSH) is desirable, or a Certified member of IOSH with a willingness to become chartered is essential.
  • Significant experience in health and safety management within a diverse, event-based organisation.
  • Proven experience in writing policies, conducting risk assessments, and managing health and safety documentation.
  • Excellent knowledge of current health and safety legislation and management systems.
  • Strong analytical skills to identify underlying health and safety issues, interpret data, and communicate implications clearly.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly and understandably.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a pragmatic approach to balancing business needs against legislative requirements.
  • Good level of IT literacy, proficient in Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, Excel, SharePoint, and PowerPoint.



This is a great short term role, working within an amazing environment of art and culture. It offers hybrid working with 3 days onsite per week and a day rate of up to £250 per day PAYE.
