Job Description - High Skills Technician - Mechanical Engineering

  • Location: West London
  • Job Type: Full-time
  • Pay: £15 per hour

Join our client's team as a High Skills Technician in Mechanical Engineering, where you will play a crucial role in supporting the educational environment within a Mechanical Engineering department. This position is ideal for someone with a strong background in mechanical engineering and a passion for education and student support.

Day-to-day of the role:
  • Regularly service and maintain tools and equipment in various labs including the Materials and Mechanical Science Lab, Thermofluid Lab, and Project Lab, ensuring all equipment is functional and safe.
  • Keep an up-to-date maintenance record and produce and update lists of equipment, tools, and consumables.
  • Carry out risk assessments in collaboration with the Course Team Leader, Section Manager, and Head of School, and recommend improvements.
  • Report major maintenance tasks to ensure minimal impact on teaching and learning.
  • Raise purchase order request forms to maintain adequate stock levels for effective teaching and learning.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of teaching environments within your area of responsibility.
  • Ensure all areas comply with health and safety and environmental requirements.
  • Supervise students in the laboratories, focusing on health and safety and good working practices.
  • Assist course teams in preparing materials and resources and setting up equipment for teaching sessions.
  • Demonstrate equipment to students as requested and supervise students during practical support/project lessons, including evening sessions.
  • Work collaboratively with other technicians to ensure continuity of provision across the School of Engineering.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • At least 2 years’ experience with mechanical test equipment, such as for material testing, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and mechanical principles.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of Health and Safety requirements, particularly in machine shop environments.
  • Industrial experience in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience working in a training environment or with young people.
  • Proficient IT skills or willingness to develop them.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Understanding of and commitment to Safeguarding, Equality and Diversity.
