Job Description - Lawyer




3 months contract with a Local Authority



Job Summary:



• A temporary opportunity has arisen for an experienced Lawyer to support the Legal Services team with a particular focus on local government commercial conveyancing.



• The successful candidate will undertake a broad range of property-related legal work, primarily involving landlord and tenant matters under the Landlord and Tenant Act 1954, alongside the sale and purchase of land.







Key Duties/Accountabilities (Sample):



• Manage a caseload of commercial property matters involving lease negotiation, renewals, and terminations



• Conduct legal work relating to the Landlord and Tenant Act 1954, including drafting and reviewing leases and licences



• Oversee transactions involving the sale and purchase of land, ensuring compliance with relevant statutory and regulatory frameworks



• Provide sound legal advice to internal stakeholders on property-related matters



• Draft, negotiate, and review legal documentation and contracts



• Assist with some residential conveyancing matters (excluding Right to Buy transactions)



• Ensure high-quality file management and accurate record-keeping



• Liaise effectively with clients, colleagues, and external parties such as surveyors and agents



• Support the organisation’s legal compliance and property governance objectives







Skills/Experience:



• Proven experience in commercial property law, particularly in the public sector or local authority context



• Strong working knowledge of the Landlord and Tenant Act 1954



• Experience handling conveyancing transactions for both commercial and residential properties



• Ability to manage a varied caseload independently and meet tight deadlines



• Excellent drafting and negotiation skills



• Proficient in using legal case management systems and Microsoft Office



• Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a legal team



• High level of accuracy and attention to detail



• Understanding of public sector governance and procurement is desirable







Additional Information:



• The closing date: 19/09/2025.



• This role is predominantly remote, with initial office attendance required for one or two full days, and ongoing presence approximately every 3 to 4 weeks.



• Qualified Solicitor, Barrister, or Legal Executive with relevant practising certificate.



• Working Hours: 37 hours per week (Full-Time).
