CRA Consulting is proud to be exclusively partnered with Sheffield City Council, one of the UK's most forward-thinking and dynamic local authorities, to recruit a Locum Homelessness Lawyer to join their highly respected in-house legal services team.
This is a remote working role offering exceptional flexibility, competitive hourly rates, and the chance to make a genuine difference in a fast-paced public sector legal environment.
If you are a qualified lawyer with strong knowledge of homelessness legislation, public law, and judicial review work, and you're seeking a new challenge where your expertise will have immediate impact - this role could be an ideal fit.

You will play a key role in supporting Sheffield City Council's frontline housing team with specialist legal advice, litigation support, and complex statutory interpretation. The role is initially offered on a 2-3 month basis, but due to continued service demand, the assignment is highly likely to extend well beyond this.
Key duties include:

• Providing legal advice on Part VII Housing Act 1996 and all aspects of homelessness law
• Drafting robust responses to pre-action protocol letters and judicial review challenges
• Advising housing officers, senior managers, and decision-makers on complex legal escalations
• Engaging with external legal representatives and advocacy bodies professionally and effectively
• Ensuring responses are accurate, well-structured, and in line with statutory obligations and case law
• Managing your own caseload independently and contributing to the wider legal team's efficiency

To hit the ground running, you will need to demonstrate the following:

• Qualified Solicitor, Barrister, or Chartered Legal Executive (or equivalent)
• Substantial experience advising on homelessness law and local authority duties under the Housing Act 1996
• Confident responding to litigation threats including judicial reviews, pre-action protocols, and urgent representations
• Excellent public law knowledge and understanding of recent case law developments
• Ideally prior experience working in a local authority legal department
• Self-motivated and capable of operating remotely with minimal supervision

• £55 - £60 per hour, umbrella (rate negotiable based on experience)
• Fully remote - occasional office attendance only if required
