Principal Primary Design

We are seeking a highly experienced and motivated Principal Primary Design Engineer to lead the design and delivery of high-voltage substation projects for SSE. This role involves overseeing the full lifecycle of primary design activities, ensuring compliance with SSE and industry standards.

• Lead and manage the primary electrical design of HV substations (132kV-400kV) for SSE projects.
• Ensure all designs comply with SSE specifications and UK regulations.
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers and design teams.
• Collaborate with project managers, civil and protection engineers, and clients to ensure seamless project execution.
• Review and approve design deliverables including layout drawings, schematics, equipment specifications, and technical reports.
• Conduct design risk assessments, technical reviews, and value engineering exercises.
• Support tendering activities, including technical input, design estimates, and client presentations.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry trends, innovations, and regulatory changes.

• Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
• Proven experience in primary substation design (preferably on SSE or National Grid projects).
• Strong understanding of UK transmission and distribution standards.
• Proficiency in design tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, or BIM platforms.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Chartered Engineer status (CEng) or working towards it is highly desirable.

• Experience with GIS and AIS substation design.
• Familiarity with CDM regulations and environmental compliance.
• Knowledge of digital substations and smart grid technologies.
