Prison Librarian

3 Month Contract With A Local Authority

• The Prison Librarian is responsible for managing the daily operations of the correctional facility’s library, providing library services to incarcerated individuals, and supporting educational, vocational, and rehabilitative programs through access to reading materials and information resources. The librarian plays a critical role in promoting literacy, personal development, and legal research within the secure environment of a correctional institution.
  

Key Responsibilities:

• Operate and maintain the prison library in accordance with institutional rules and security protocols.
  




• Organize, catalog, and manage a diverse collection of books, legal materials, magazines, newspapers, and digital resources.
  




• Assist inmates in locating and selecting reading materials appropriate for education, recreation, or legal purposes.
  




• Support inmates’ educational and rehabilitation goals by providing materials for GED preparation, vocational training, and self-improvement.
  




• Oversee the delivery of legal reference services and ensure access to mandated legal materials.
  




• Supervise and train inmate library clerks and volunteers in library operations and customer service.
  




• Collaborate with education staff to support literacy programs, book clubs, or educational workshops.
  




• Maintain inventory control, including acquisition, loss prevention, and weeding of materials.
  




• Ensure all library activities comply with institutional safety and security regulations.
  




• Create and maintain records, reports, and statistics on library use and inmate participation.
  




• Foster a safe, respectful, and orderly environment within the library space.
  

• At least 1–2 years of professional library experience (public, academic, or institutional).
  


• Experience working with diverse or underserved populations preferred.
  


• Experience in a correctional, institutional, or special library setting is highly desirable.
  

• Working Hours: 25 Per Week
