Job Description - SEN Teaching Assistant Required in Blackburn for September 2025!

SEN Teaching Assistant

  • Job Type: Full-time
  • Location: Blackburn, BB1
  • Pay rate: £14.18p/hr

We are inviting applications for an SEN Teaching Assistant at a forward-thinking primary school located in Blackburn. This role is designed to support a non-verbal student in Year 1 who requires a highly adapted curriculum and specific sensory accommodations. The ideal candidate will be energetic, enthusiastic, and proactive, with a strong foundation in special educational needs strategies and a willingness to learn and adapt.

Day-to-day of the role:

  • Provide tailored support to a non-verbal student, focusing on intensive interaction and the use of objects of reference to aid communication.
  • Implement and adapt the curriculum to meet the student's individual learning needs, ensuring progress at a pace suitable for the student.
  • Manage sensory sensitivities by adapting the environment and activities to meet the student's needs, including the use of ear defenders to manage noise sensitivity.
  • Support the student's engagement in activities they enjoy, such as puzzles and numbers, while managing rigid behaviour patterns like lining up objects.
  • Assist with personal care needs, including nappy changes and supporting independent eating.
  • Use Autism Education Trust (AET) strategies effectively, such as bucket time, curiosity approach, what’s in the box, doh disco, and see & learn.
  • Build positive relationships with parents and collaborate with them to enhance the student’s educational experience.
  • Maintain a safe environment by monitoring and managing pica behaviour to prevent ingestion of non-food items.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Experience in supporting children with special educational needs, particularly those who are non-verbal and have sensory sensitivities.
  • Competency in using ICT tools to enhance learning and communication.
  • Knowledge of intensive interaction, objects of reference, and Autism Education Trust (AET) strategies.
  • Ability to adapt teaching and learning materials to meet the needs of students with a highly adapted curriculum.
  • Strong team player who is also capable of working independently.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to pre-empt and effectively manage challenging situations.
  • Commitment to professional development and learning new skills.
  • Relevant qualifications in education, childcare, or a related field are preferred.
