Senior EMAT VAT Manager 6 to 12 months ftc

This full-time hybrid working role is based in London within the EMEA and APAC Tax team. We are a key function within Finance having responsibility for managing the group’s tax affairs over multiple jurisdictions. We are seeking an experienced VAT professional to join our team to take responsibility for leading the indirect tax function, to ensure compliance for group VAT returns both in the UK and in a number of international branches. In addition, you will be responsible for providing indirect tax advisory services across the group. This role also involves supporting review of international businesses to document the VAT implications of intercompany recharges.

Key Responsibilities

1. Helping to ensure the VAT compliance of the VAT group is correct by reviewing returns, including overseeing the journalling process, liaising with the business and working with advisors to provide dashboarding to senior stakeholders.
2. Performing key systems and process assurance reviews to identify gaps and indirect tax risks, and then work with system and process owners to rectify issues and define scope of governance and controls to manage future risk.
3. Provide tax technical answers to ad hoc queries as they arise both internally, and in writing to external stakeholders such as HMRC.
4. Provide informative, high quality indirect tax advice to all business areas.
5. Build a good working relationship with HMRC and monitor the partial exemption position of the group.
6. Advise the group regarding the indirect tax implications of any acquisitions or disposals.
7. Management of and assistance with indirect tax audits and enquiries where applicable.
8. Identify areas to improve the effectiveness of our VAT activities and initiate efforts to streamline and improve processes using the group’s tax technology resources.
9. Working with the business to document processes and controls, including monitoring implementation of those procedures within the organisation.
10. Provide training to improve employee performance within specific functional areas (such as brokerage receivable and accounts payable).
11. Build relationships with important internal stakeholders and act as their business partner to understand new product offerings and transactions.
12. To liaise with our external auditors to ensure smooth quarterly and year-end processes.
13. Manage timely and accurate production of VAT returns in EMEA and APAC regions, ensuring VAT & GST returns are filed and paid on time.
14. Assistance with other transaction taxes including Financial Transaction Tax (FTT) and stamp duties as necessary.
15. Conduct a continual process review including maintaining an up-to-date manual of the VAT return process.

Requirements

1. Qualified CTA/ACA or VAT related qualification essential.
2. Previous experience of completing VAT returns and a strong technical understanding of HMRC VAT compliance/ VAT accounting.
3. Good understanding of international VAT issues.
4. Previous experience of working in a partially exempt business advantageous.
5. Management experience of staff (VAT Accountant and other tax accountants providing support).
6. Excellent Excel skills and knowledge of finance systems (Oracle).
7. Able to investigate and amend reported financials to remove known inaccuracies.
8. A drive to fully understand the detail and resolve issues in the correct way.
9. Ability to work autonomously and under pressure.
10. Encouraged to automate or change existing processes to increase efficiency and effectiveness.
