Senior Engineer - Bridges & Structures Manager

We are seeking a Senior Engineer – Bridges & Structures Manager to join our Transportation Infrastructure Service. This senior technical role is responsible for providing high-quality, efficient, effective, and customer-focused service. You will lead a team delivering highway structures schemes and work programmes, including structural maintenance, and provide comprehensive technical and professional advice within the company and to other organisations and agencies.

• Manage highway structure assets, including bridges and retaining walls, developing maintenance programmes, and supervising the inspection programme.
• Lead and manage the delivery of schemes within the Transportation Capital Investment Programme, monitoring associated scheme budgets and liaising across the service.
• Represent the Service on working groups, forums, and partnerships.
• Collect and utilise technical data to prepare cost estimates, specifications, drawings, contract documents, bills of quantities, and schedules of work.
• Provide consultancy advice and produce comprehensive technical reports for Council representatives and clients.
• Develop briefs, issue work for detailed design, and liaise with other service units and external bodies to foster cooperation and provide customer-focused services.
• Act as ‘CDM’ principal designer and/or project manager where appropriate.
• Manage, monitor, and control scheme and works order budgets and assist with the management of the internal budget of the team.
• Supervise site works, ensuring specifications and safety standards are met.
• Manage and supervise other technical staff within the team.

• Substantial experience as an Engineer within the Transportation Infrastructure Service.
• Extensive knowledge of transportation, road traffic, and road safety policies, procedures, and legislation.
• Experience in initial design and development of new schemes/projects to meet structures and asset management legislation.
• Proficiency in specialist IT software packages e.g., AutoCAD, Mapinfo, GIS.
• Chartered Engineer (C.Eng) through membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers or Institution of Structural Engineers.
• Practical knowledge of regulatory requirements and legislation affecting the service, with a focus on Construction Design and Maintenance Regulations (CDM).
