Job Description - Teaching Assistant SEMH experienced

Teaching Assistant (SEMH experienced) - Primary
Location: Islington
Salary: £20,085 - £22,085 per annum
Contract Type: Full-time, Term Time Only
Start Date: 1st September 2025

Horizon Teachers are in partnership with a North London-based Primary Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) that provides specialist support for pupils aged 5-11 who have been excluded or are at risk of exclusions from mainstream education. The school offers a nurturing, inclusive, and highly structured environment, with a strong focus on emotional regulation, positive behaviour strategies, and personalised learning pathways.

The school are seeking an experienced Teaching assistant who has supported students with SEMH needs or challenging behaviour, preferably within a PRU, SEN or alternative provision setting.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Support pupils with challenging behaviour on a one-to-one basis and in small groups, using trauma-informed and restorative approaches
  • Help implement individual behaviour support plans and EHCP targets in collaboration with teaching staff and external professionals
  • Provide emotional regulation support and promote social-emotional development through structured routines and therapeutic strategies
  • Support classroom management and contribute to a calm, purposeful learning environment
  • Build strong, trusting relationships with pupils to help improve their self-esteem, emotional wellbeing and readiness to learn
  • Liaise regularly with parents/carers and attend relevant multi-agency meetings to support pupils' progress and well-being
  • Work flexibly across the school day, including supporting transitions, break/lunchtime routines, and any off-site learning opportunities
  • Contribute actively to whole-school development and CPS sessions relating to behaviour, safeguarding, and mental health.
