The post holder will work as part of a leisure team at Queen’s Campus Sports Centre, Stockton on Tees , to deliver the highest possible standards of service and customer care to sports facility users, both indoors and outdoors, and deliver personal training and fitness classes as and when required. The role of Senior Fitness Assistant is a key frontline post in ensuring this objective is maintained.

The post holder will be required to work shifts and unsociable hours.

What you need to demonstrate when you apply

To be considered for this role, here are the skills/experience we’re looking for:

Qualifications/Experience

  • Five GCSE’s at least Grade C or level four (or equivalent) including English Language and Mathematics or equivalent experience.
  • Experience of working in a team delivering customer focussed services or having relevant qualifications for the role.
  • General administrative experience in an office environment.
  • Experience of managing time to meet deadlines.
  • Hold a recognised Level 3 qualification in health, fitness and exercise instruction.
  • Experience of providing advice and guidance to a range of customers and colleagues.

Skills/Abilities/Knowledge

  • Good spoken and written communication skills.
  • Good IT skills, including use of Microsoft Office.
  • Committed to training/continuing professional development.
  • Ability to solve problems as part of a team and resolve straightforward issues
  • Ability to motivate and engage with stakeholders taking part in exercise programmes.
  • Hold a first aid certificate and/or have experience of dealing with first aid situations
  • Experience of cash handling or working with booking systems.

Typical Role Requirements

Here are the kind of activities that you’ll be asked to undertake and ways in which you’ll be expected to operate.



Service Delivery

  • P rovide an excellent and timely service to our students, your colleagues, community members and anyone else you come across as part of your role.
  • Follow established procedures when carrying out your role and vary or refer to more senior colleagues when necessary.
  • Deliver personal training and fitness classes to facility users.
  • Assist team members within a wider service team with a rotation of tasks and duties or with own small area of day to day responsibility.
  • Respond to service users logging and recording queries and information systematically in accordance with procedures, as required.
  • Operate a system to record, dispense and distribute resources and information as required.
  • Look after yourself and others by following health and safety regulations, being aware of any hazards and risks and reporting any incidents.
  • Contribute to the tidying, set-up and maintenance of facilities, equipment and resources.
  • Provide direction to service users about the range of classes and activities available and how to access them.
  • Help to move, set-up and maintain any sporting or fitness equipment within the centre.
  • Help your colleagues when required with other key activities undertaken within your service e.g., community group support , reception duties.
  • Help and cooperate with the rest of your team on operational matters to help achieve shared objectives.
  • Liaise with other staff to ensure that services are being delivered in an efficient and collaborative way.
  • Complete necessary skills training to deliver a service in a leisure and fitness environment.
  • Administer basic first aid, as and when required.

Communication/Personal

  • Show a commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion and the University’s values.
  • Follow established procedures to r espond to queries and bring any complex issues to the attention of more experience team members.
  • Respond to queries and provide information about [events and activities] run by the service.
  • Learn the skills needed to deliver service s in a leisure environment.
