Job Description - Legacy Mentor

JOB SUMMARY A proactive role model and clinical expert who is an experienced health and social care professional in the late stages of their career. The Legacy Mentor will support the development of excellence in the practice learning environment for learners, students, and all new starters to their division and within NUH with a focus on providing strategies to impart expert practice knowledge and experienc Provide support for practice assessors and supervisors, preceptees and preceptors in their role. This will include providing coaching for newly qualified clinical professionals and/or students on placement to enhance their knowledge and skill Ensure sharing of best practice within and across divisions to promote a culture of excellence Work closely with divisional education leads and clinical teams to support and implement the NUH Trust guidance on preceptorship and clinical supervision for nurses and midwives, nursing associates, health care assistants and midwifery support worker Work with local education teams and the institute of care excellence to facilitate and support clinical and educational programmes relevant to division/area Support effective communication and proactive working relationships between NUH and nursing / midwifery programme providers from HEIs as required Provide pastoral support for junior and less experienced healthcare professionals within the directorate, signposting to appropriate services and escalating where appropriate Identifying key themes or challenges and feeding back via appropriate governance structure Impart expert knowledge, skills and experience to less experienced staff via formal and informal teaching, support and clinical shadowing The post holder will work part time, with hours being negotiated locally with a focus on flexible working and service need. They may be required to work across varying wards and departments as required. The post holder may be expected to hot desk as desks and lockers are limited KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES With the support of the Divisional Education Lead and Clinical Educators: Clinical and Leadership Responsibilities Supporting practice placements for learners as part of the NUH strategic aim for supporting practice education Ensure protected time for the role, particularly if this is part of an existing role Receive training, where required, in coaching and mentoring Be passionate about their clinical profession and engaging with others, as well as visibly demonstrating collaboration with those undertaking pastoral roles Working with the Institute Education team to ensure staff meet NMC regulatory requirements and are trained to deliver the highest standard of education support to students, learners and Newly Qualified nurses at NUH To act as a preceptorship champion, promoting the value of preceptorship and supporting implementation within the directorate To act as a visible resource of support and advice for learners, preceptors, mentors and managers in practice, escalating clinical concerns appropriately and liaising with higher education facilities and clinical teams Support the facilitation of in-house accredited training programmes for new starters if applicable. Research and Development Promote and practice evidence based nursing / midwifery care Provide clinical expertise on a range of projects, supporting best practice and enhancing the learning environment for all Develop or contribute, where appropriate to audit and research that enhances the clinical area/new starter experience Communication and Relationships 3.1 Develop and maintain links with higher education providers to influence curriculum developments, support recruitment events for new students and the implementation of the curriculum in clinical placement areas 3.2 Raise the profile of the role of legacy mentors and share good practice with others enhancing the profile of the organisation and providing support to managers 3.3 Work as an integral member of the division to develop appropriate strategies and support for relevant staff in early career, and support retention. Management Responsibilities 4.1 To contribute to the development and implementation of policies and procedures relating to student /learner placements, preceptorship, clinical supervision and continuing professional development. 4.2 Develop effective working relationships with all key partners and stakeholders across NUH and externally to ensure two-way feedback, communication and partnership working. 4.3 Participate in the selection and appointment of students and newly qualified nurses / midwives as required Professional Responsibilities 5.1 To proactively participate in clinical supervision as a supervisee and as a supervisor for ongoing professional development and to provide support for staff. 5.2 Identify personal training and development needs to ensure continuing professional development. 5.3 Attend and contribute to the associated programme of support for Legacy Mentors and help develop a community of practice across NUH Education Responsibilities 6.1 Be responsible for keeping up to date with legislation, Trust policies and procedures and national policy relating to practice learning health and social care education, to ensure the learning environment is supportive and high functioning 6.2 To be conversant with the Trusts training and development policies and procedures and demonstrate a sound working knowledge of the practical implications and applications of these to managers. 6.3 Contribute to the development of Trust internal policies, practices and procedures as relevant to role. 6.4 Support ward managers and clinical educators to maintain a positive learning environment for all staff and learners. 6.5 Support delivery and practical coordination of the Trust professional induction programme for N&M. To use protective clothing and equipment where provided. Whilst the aim of the Trust is to promote a co-operative and constructive view of health and safety concerns in the organisation, all staff must be aware that a wilful or irresponsible disregard for safety matters may give rise to disciplinary proceedings. Governance To actively participate in governance activities to ensure that the highest standards of care and business conduct are achieved. Health and Wellbeing Employees are expected to take all reasonable steps to look after both their physical health and mental health.
