Job Description - Clinical Educator Midwifery

This is an opportunity to work within the Maternity Clinical Education team and ensure the highest standards of education and clinical care are in place. The post holder will collaborate with the trust, higher education institutions and practice development leads to implement, maintain and evaluate systems and processes, which ensure regulatory standards are maintained. As a visible point of contact for staff and students working in practice on a daily basis, the post holder will lead on the delivery of induction at unit level support the ward staff in their orientation andtraining programmes. In conjunction with the ward manager and practice development leads ensure that continuing professional development is provided for all staff, including for students so that the required level of knowledge and competence is maintained and achieved.   • A proactive role-model that supports practice development clinical education workforce transformation and research and innovation in maternity across the Family Health Division to ensure the successful delivery of the Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) Nursing and Midwifery (N& M) Strategy. The Midwifery Clinical Educator works to support the priority objectives of the Division
  • Supports leadership and gives advice and support, fostering a learning culture that values high quality patient care, evidence based practice, research and innovation
  • Works in partnership with the practice development leads, clinical leads, senior midwives and nurses, matrons, ward/clinic and community managers to ensure the delivery of the N& M Strategy and implementation of effective strategies to enhance staff satisfaction, staff engagement, improved staff retention and multi-disciplinary team working to achieve agreed common goals and outcomes
  • Ensures the highest standards of education, research, and clinical care are in place. In collaboration with the trust and practice development leads implements, maintains and evaluates systems and processes, which ensure standards, are maintained
  • A proactive role model who leads in the clinical environment on the provision of clinical educationand assessment of competence in the ward, department and/or community setting.
  • Responsible for the continued development of evidence-based midwifery practice across the maternity service
  • A clinically credible practitioner, the post holder will utilise their clinical experience and related skills to provide support for all staff and demonstrate a commitment to the development and advancement of midwifery practice
  • The post holder will work some of their time within the clinical setting supporting learning within the acute and community setting and establishing change in practice as well as working alongside team members to support individual development to meet the needs of the service
  • Time will be focussed on developing clinical practice through change management, establishing guidance, education resources and aides
  • Supports staff, ensuring the provision of high quality patient care in the most efficient and safe manner in accordance with directorate and trust policies and procedure.
KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Be responsible for the assessment, delivery and evaluation of clinical education according to individual staff learning needs in clinical practice.
  • Be a visible point of contact for staff and students working in practice on a daily basis.
  • Promote reflective practice and experiential learning opportunities developing a learning culture in the clinical environment.
  • Facilitate the development and maintenance of clinical staff competence in the use of medical equipment in the clinical area by liaising with identified equipment trainers in the maternity unit in order to comply with the trusts health and safety policy.
  • Be a visible role model and example to ensure that the dignity, rights and confidentiality of the patient and individual team members are protected and maintained in accordance with national standards and guidelines.
  • Provide care within the clinical and community setting, maximising opportunities for training and educational input.
  • Participate in the development of all maternity policies and procedures and clinical audit. Contribute to clinical guidelines and protocols where appropriate.

Managerial



  • Ensure the delivery of care is in accordance with the policies, procedures, guidelines and practices of Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and ensure all staff are up to date with such procedures.
  • Assist with the establishment, motivation and development of the team. Assist with the identification of individuals personal and developmental needs through performance reviews and competency assessment and in conjunction with the Practice Development Leads and ward/unit manager complete training needs analysis.
  • In conjunction with the Practice Development Leads and ward/unit manager, review team composition, performance and deficiencies to ensure the correct skill mix is available to provide quality patient care. Participate in the recruitment and selection of staff as appropriate.
  • In partnership with the Practice Development Leads and ward/unit manager, establish a clear focus and direction for the team. Allocate work among the team ensuring staff understand the purpose and objectives of the directorate and the clinical educators role within the team. Provide them with guidance and support in order for them to fulfil their roles. Ensure that they are kept informed of directorate policy, strategy and progress.
  • Contribute to the creation of a positive team and working environment, promoting flexible working. Encourage team members to demonstrate initiative in their application to practice. In conjunction with the PDLs and ward/unit manager, identify and minimise interpersonal conflicts that may affect team or individual performance.
  • Contribute to the monitoring and control of expenditure and the use of resources.
  • Convey and present information, written or verbal, formally or informally, as appropriate.
  • Contribute the effective management of change in response to clinical or organisation demands.
  • Apply the directorate and trust clinical governance strategies to the clinical area.
  • Support the PDLs and ward/unit manager in monitoring and reviewing quality standards that impact upon the delivery of care.
  • Contribute to updating and formulation of new procedures both clinical and other.

Professional



  • Lead on the delivery of education at unit level support the staff in their orientation and training programmes. In conjunction with the ward manager and practice development leads, ensure that continuing professional development is provided for all staff, including students (and elective placements), so that the required level of knowledge and competence is maintained and achieved.
  • Take opportunities to be a representative at a local level and participate as a member of the senior nursing and midwifery team within the directorate, making positive contributions to the strategic planning of the service.
  • Provide an authoritative and credible source of knowledge and specialist clinical advice/information to the team. Take an active role in self-development, objectively reviewing own performance in terms of management, clinical practice and decision making. Identify own needs and take appropriate steps to meet those needs. Keep abreast of clinical and professional developments and be able to demonstrate this in accordance with NMC requirements and clinical practice.
  • Co-operate with and participate in research undertaken on the unit by midwifery and medical staff in order to carry forward the development of research based patient care.
  • Lead and direct in the implementation of relevant new research-led practice on the unit in order to improve patient care.
  • Establish and maintain professional networks with educators across the trust and relevant education providers and organisations.
  • In conjunction with professional colleagues encourage and facilitate multi-disciplinary training and education. Directorate Specific
  • In conjunction with PDLs and ward/unit managers ensure mandatory training database is accurate and maintained in real-time.
  • Ensure staff attends mandatory training sessions assist in the development of a planned programme of attendance of mandatory training and time-out days.
  • Assist staff to complete competency packages and ensure up to date records are maintained in staff files and on training database.
  • Assist midwives to comply with NMC regulation by supporting revalidation.
  • Assist in educational audits as required.

Maternity Specific



  • Maintain clinical competence and act as a resource person within the ward/unit team for professional practice development.
  • Responsible for the assessment of care needs, the development of programmes of care and the implementation and evaluation of these to ensure the delivery of a high standard of care to babies and their parents/carers, liaising appropriately with the ward/unit manager.
  • Maintain effective communications with parents/carers, relatives and other members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure that appropriate information is shared and patient needs are met.
  • Organise and prioritise own workload to ensure that the needs of mothers, babies and their families are met.
  • Promote and demonstrate contemporary and proactive approaches to midwifery practice and in collaboration with other senior midwives and medical staff facilitate the advancement of this practice.
  • Act as an advocate for the woman, the baby and the families ensuring that their best interests come first.
  • Facilitate a breast-feeding culture, implement and support Baby Friendly status of maternity units at NUH.
