Salary: £31,000 - £32,500 per annum

(Maternity cover, 12 month fixed term contract)

Organisation position and purpose

This post will provide maternity cover to support the Bioimaging core facility at Pirbright which underpins our studies on the cell biology of host-pathogen interactions. This will include ensuring smooth and efficient day to day running of the laboratory, carrying out sample preparation protocols, imaging samples, data analysis and troubleshooting of microscopy experiments. Following appropriate training, this post will form part of the team that enables and promotes the use of microscopy at Pirbright.

Main duties and responsibilities:

Performing microscopy experiments, which will include:

  • Sample preparation of cryostat sections for immunofluorescence, confocal imaging and image interpretation.
  • Sample preparation of cell cultures for immunofluorescence, confocal imaging and image interpretation.
  • Investigation into inactivation methods for SAPO4 viruses.
  • Presenting image data to managers and other scientists within the Institute

Assisting with users, which will include:

  • Liaising with scientists wishing to use the Bioimaging facility.
  • Troubleshooting experimental design, sample preparation and image analysis.
  • Collaborating on microscopy projects.

Performing laboratory management duties, which will include:

  • Bioimaging laboratory and equipment maintenance (including troubleshooting).
  • Reviewing and ordering laboratory consumables, preparing communal solutions to maintain a constant supply.
  • Hosting external microscope engineers.

Due to the nature of the work we do, all successful applicants will be required to go through a comprehensive screening process including reference and qualification checks, financial and security clearances.

Essential/Desirable requirements

Essential

  • Minimum BSc (Hons) in a biological sciences subject or equivalent experience
  • Experience in confocal microscopy techniques
  • Experience of working in the field of cell biology and/or virology
  • Evidence of high attention to detail and the ability to plan work effectively
  • Evidence of excellent oral communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of people
  • Evidence of ability to work with minimal supervision

Desirable

  • Experience of advanced light microscope techniques, e.g. STED, live cell imaging, animal tissue immunofluorescence
  • Experience of working in a biological containment environment
  • Experience of cell culture techniques
  • Experience of molecular virology techniques
  • Evidence of working within a quality assurance framework
