Job Description - Technical Manager

The Centre of Biomedical Sciences Education is looking to recruit a new Technical Manager to oversee the laboratory provision of biomedical science, anatomy and physiology to a diverse range of students within the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences.

Reporting to the Centre Director this role is required to manage a complete technical support service for teaching and teaching-related projects including technical staff, several teaching laboratories, equipment and associated space within the Centre.

The Technical Manager is a key member of the Centre’s Senior Management Team and will be working with a range of key stakeholders (academic, technical and professional services) across the University in regard to Health and Safety, IT, finance/procurement and HR.

About the person

The ideal candidate will have substantial technical experience in a biomedical teaching laboratory with strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills. The successful candidate must have, and your application should clearly demonstrate that you meet the following criteria:

1. Academic or Vocational qualifications (eg HNC/HND, NVQ 4 or relevant standard in a relevant scientific subject) or lower qualifications with more relevant experience

2. Typically 5 years experience of supervision in a Biomedical Science teaching environment to include:

• Management experience in a number of areas, including infrastructure and equipment procurement, calibration and maintenance; health and safety and COSHH

• Recent experience of line managing and directing staff in the preparation, resourcing and organisation of large laboratory-based practical classes

• Recent experience of Human Tissue Act approved procedures as they relate to the procurement, storage and disposal of human cadavers

• Experience in line management of technical staff

• Ability to perform a wide range of Biomedical Science-related technical duties to a very high standard enabling students to learn from their practical experiences

• Ability to troubleshoot, maintain and repair multiple items of laboratory teaching equipment at short notice to enable students in large practical classes to achieve required learning outcomes

• Demonstrable and broad understanding of Health and Safety regulations and other legislation related to laboratory research e.g. Human Tissue Act, COSHH

• Liaison with senior academic staff and external organisations

• Demonstrable knowledge of financial management
