Infrastructure Engineer

To proactively monitor the availability and performance of core IT infrastructure via a combination of point in time checks and software monitoring tools e.g. Solarwinds. To ensure new connections are added to existing monitoring processes. To ensure that new IT infrastructure is: Designed to be resilient and highly available as appropriate to the needs of the service and based on any cost constraints applied. Designed to be scalable in order to meet future growth and demand. To ensure that growth in usage/resources is managed and brought to the attention of the Network Specialist. To ensure that the performance of key IT services are not degraded as a result of a lack of capacity. Documented appropriately to facilitate ongoing operational support. To ensure that IT infrastructure is kept secure and available through: Configuring and setting up VPNs, Firewalls and security appliances to protect access to core Trust IT infrastructure, systems and data. A program of proactive maintenance and patching in line with manufacturers recommended best practice. An appropriate method of backups, which are regularly tested. To follow formal Trust Incident Management procedures ensuring that any network or telephony outages are resolved quickly and efficiently and lessons are learned to prevent a reoccurrence. To follow formal Trust Change Management procedures, ensuring that changes made to the live IT Infrastructure are successful. This to be achieved through careful planning, assessing & minimising risks, planning contingency, managing user expectations, testing changes in advance and applying change at an appropriate time to minimise clinical disruption. To apply detailed technical knowledge and generic technical problem solving skills to investigate complex incidents and problems, analysing data, error messages, event logs, reports and audit trails, identifying faulty or malfunctioning equipment/software, tracking who did what and implementing corrective action. To install and configure new IT infrastructure typically comprising switches/routers/firewalls (but also including new servers and virtual machines as necessary) to best practice configurations ensuring documentation is updated and appropriate backups are implemented. To log and manage 3rd line support calls and co-ordinate complex service incidents and change requests, with third party suppliers / other organisations. To proactively share knowledge with colleagues and co-workers, offering one-to-one training and producing documentation to support shared learning. To provide training and mentoring to less experienced or more junior staff in the team To participate in the On Call standby rota if required supporting core Trust IT Systems out of normal working hours. To maintain and enhance technical knowledge & skills through attending appropriate training courses as agreed in any performance & development review or as necessitated by Trusts Digital strategy or individual projects. This should include taking any examinations associated with the course. To ensure security, access and information governance policies are adhered to as defined by the Trust and report any breaches to the Information Governance Manager. To ensure the safe disposal and destruction of equipment as set out by WEEE regulations and Information Governance policies. To assist with any other task which will help to provide a service that complies with the Departments agreed levels of service and expected levels of customer service.
