CONTRACT TYPE: Fixed-term Contract, Full-time 


DEPARTMENT: BBC Studios Natural History Unit (NHU) 


LOCATION: Bridgewater House, Bristol with a minimum of 4 days per week in the office with extensive periods working on location internationally. 


PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: £38,000 - £50,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.


START DATE: February 2026


 


Interviews are expected to be held in the wb 9th February.

ABOUT BBC STUDIOS NHU


 


BBC Studios’ Natural History Unit (NHU) is the leading producer of wildlife programming, creating award-winning content with a world class reputation. Our output ranges from ambitious landmarks (Planet Earth III and Dynasties) to children’s programming (Deadly Dinosaurs and Andy’s Adventures), as well as ground-breaking travel, adventure, formatted, presenter-led and event programming such as Prehistoric Planet for Apple TV+ and the BAFTA winning Springwatch for the BBC.


 


PURPOSE OF THE ROLE


 


BBC Studios Natural History Unit is embarking on a spectacular landmark production following on from the recent success of Asia, Americas and Kingdom. We are looking for a number of experienced and enthusiastic Assistant Producers to work on this major project for a third-party broadcaster. 


 


YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT


 


You will need to be highly creative and organised with excellent storytelling skills, visual flair, and the ability to take an innovative and imaginative approach to delivering outstanding content. We are looking for resourceful and forward-thinking individuals that are confident in finding stories, setting up shoots and are proficient in managing teams in the field.


 


YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE


 


ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:


 



  • Evidence of strong directing skills, excellent visual sensibilities and the ability to identify key storylines with emotionally engaging, character-led storytelling.

  • Lead Director on at least three international landmark natural history shoots. 

  • Experience in delivering high-end behavioural led natural history content that demonstrates complete coverage of an event/story. 

  • A willingness to spend long periods on location, primarily internationally.

  • Evidence of being a great communicator with the ability to work collaboratively with Producers, Researchers and the production management team when planning shoots. 


 


DESIRABLE CRITERIA:


 



  • Proven experience in working on projects for US audiences and an understanding of what should be considered when creating content for them. 

  • A proven record of using the latest camera technology, in innovative ways, to create fresh and impactful imagery. 

  • Experience of working in the edit.

  • Experience of writing for broadcast TV.

  • A knowledge of any South American language is useful.

  • A specialist knowledge and experience of working in challenging environments.

  • Understanding of ‘duty of care’ with regard to individuals’ wellbeing and production health & safety issues, both in the office and on location. 

  • Experience with new media and digital content.  

  • Experience in self-shooting contributors and generating behind the scenes content.
