The Role

As an Armourer Large Calibre, you will enable the safe, compliant, and effective maintenance and operation of large, medium, and small calibre weapon systems, directly supporting high‑integrity test and evaluation activities.

Day-to-day, you’ll lead and supervise maintenance, setup, operation and T&E activities across weapon systems, ensuring adherence to safety, security, and engineering governance while helping deliver high-quality technical outputs and continuous improvement within the OME weapon capability.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Leading the maintenance, setup, operation and testing of small, medium and large calibre weapon systems


• Ensuring compliance with safety, security and engineering governance including EMERs, AESPs and JSPs


• Conducting fault diagnosis, repairs and preventative maintenance activities


• Supporting trials activities including data collection, analysis and reporting


• Working with stakeholders to ensure safe, compliant and effective delivery of test and evaluation tasks

Essential experience of the Armourer Large Calibre:

• Strong understanding of mechanical systems with ability to diagnose faults and perform intermediate maintenance


• Solid working knowledge of safety practices including risk assessments and hazard identification


• Experience supporting test and evaluation activities including data collection and reporting


• Strong understanding of security protocols including Section 5 requirements and secure storage procedures

Essential qualifications for the Armourer Large Calibre:

• Recognised engineering apprenticeship/NVQ or equivalent military/industry qualification

This role is full time, based at Shoeburyness. Working hours are Monday - Thursday 7.30am - 4.30pm and Friday 7.30am - 12.30pm. Travel to other QinetiQ and customer sites will be expected.

QinetiQ Shoeburyness is a significant test and evaluation facility specialising in defence and security technologies. The site is focused on Environmental Testing including the evaluation of various ordnance, explosives and related systems. Implementing measures to ensure that testing activities comply with environmental regulations and minimise ecological impact.
