Job Description - Assistant Geomatics Officer

Cotswold Archaeology is a leading provider of professional archaeology and heritage services in the UK. With over 250 employees and offices in Andover, Cirencester, Milton Keynes, and Suffolk, we offer bespoke solutions to both private and public sector clients nationwide.

We now have an exciting opportunity for the permanent role of Assistant Geomatics Officer based in our Suffolk location.



Role purpose:


The Assistant Geomatics Officer will work independently most of the time in the field and sometimes in the office to carry out archaeological survey, stakeout trenches, process, and disseminate survey data.


The role requires the individual to create and maintain effective relationships with all members of the fieldwork and geomatics team as well as Cotswold Archaeology support and administrative staff.


The Assistant Geomatics Officer will also be required to liaise with Cotswold Archaeology Fieldwork Project Managers.



Main duties and responsibilities of the role:



  • Support successful and safe digital field survey.

  • Undertake configuration, maintenance, and security of field survey equipment.

  • Ensure quality of digitised and field survey data from creation to completion

  • Provide technical support and advice on geospatial requirements to all departments.

  • Create, manipulate, and present archaeological datasets using appropriate software.

  • Assist in conducting staff training programs.

  • Manage personal workload and assist in Geomatics workflows.

  • Assist in on-site fieldwork operations as needed.

  • Perform other relevant duties as required.

  • Implement all relevant policies.

  • Observe Fire and Health & Safety Regulations and follow safe-working requirements.

Essential criteria


Qualifications, experience and knowledge 



  • Degree or post-graduate qualification in Archaeology (or relevant subject)

  • Proven experience as a field archaeologists on evaluations, watching briefs and excavations

  • Understanding of the principles of archaeological survey



Skills and abilities



  • Methodical approach to working to and meeting deadlines

  • Experience of archaeological field survey using survey GNSS instruments (preferable Leica) and the handling and manipulation of field survey data

  • Capable of providing clear descriptions of observations and interpretations made in the conduct of archaeological survey work.

  • Excellent IT skills, particularly in the use of Microsoft Office.

  • Full, clean manual driving licence.

Desirable criteria


Qualifications, experience and knowledge



  • Proven experience of providing teaching/training/mentoring to a variety of participants

  • Proven experience of contributing to wider project reports/publications, research projects, outreach projects

  • Membership of Charterered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA)



Skills and abilities



  • Ability to manipulate archaeological data within a range of relevant software programs (eg Leica, Infinity, ArcMap)

  • Proven experience of archaeological building and earthwork survey

  • Proven experience of geophysical survey data collection

  • Ability to configure and troubleshoot Leica GNSS instruments

  • Sufficient experience of ESRI geodatabase management 

  • Experience of remote data capture systems including terrestrial and airborne solutions

  • CSCS card
