Job Description - Assistant Obituaries Editor (FTC)

Working in a small, collaborative team, the Assistant Obituaries Editor will produce obituaries for The Telegraph, for both digital and print.

The postholder will also contribute to the production of the Court & Social page.

Please note that this is a maternity cover role.

Key responsibilities include

  • Editing and writing obituaries in the Telegraph’s lively house style.
  • Contributing to discussions about obituary subjects likely to appeal to Telegraph readers.
  • Exhibiting both confidence and tact when liaising with outside contributors, whether journalists or family members.
  • Building and publishing digital content. 
  • Reviewing performance data to understand the Telegraph’s audience and understand what publishing and promotion techniques work well and why.

Additionally, the Obituaries team is collectively responsible for the Court & Social page. 

  • Editing submitted material into house style: for example, compiling news of clergy promotions, legal news, diplomatic and military postings, club and livery company dinners, etc.
  • Some journalistic experience is required, as well as an interest in obituaries or biography more generally. 
  • A keen interest in the Telegraph's style of obituaries and willingness to learn about them is essential - the aim would be to quickly pick up the Telegraph obituaries house style, editing and writing material, and making editorial judgments.
  • Ability to assimilate and condense large amounts of information.
  • Able to work to tight deadlines and work under pressure.
  • Experience of reacting to changing events and breaking news stories - willingness to ‘muck in’, occasionally at inconvenient times of day as the news demands.
  • Interest in current affairs and recent history.
  • Good general knowledge.
  • Digital publishing experience and familiarity with content management systems.
