Job Description - Assistant Project Manager - Highways & Infrastructure


9 - 12 Month Contract With A Local Authority

Job Purpose

The Assistant Project Manager supports the successful planning, coordination and delivery of infrastructure projects, ensuring they are completed safely, on time, within budget and to the required quality standards. Working closely with Project Managers and key stakeholders, the role assists in managing project programmes, procurement, financial reporting, risk management and stakeholder engagement while contributing to the delivery of transport infrastructure improvements and organisational objectives.













Key Responsibilities



  • Support the planning, coordination and delivery of infrastructure projects from inception through to completion.

  • Assist Project Managers in managing project scope, schedules, budgets, risks and resources to ensure successful project outcomes.

  • Prepare technical reports, project documentation and progress updates for internal and external stakeholders.

  • Monitor project performance, expenditure and programme milestones, reporting variances and risks where appropriate.

  • Support procurement activities, contract administration and compliance with organisational policies and relevant legislation.

  • Help implement effective project controls, including change management and project scheduling using project management software.

  • Engage with internal teams, consultants, contractors, local authorities, community groups and other stakeholders to support successful project delivery.

  • Assist in organising consultation activities and maintaining effective communication with customers, businesses and the wider community.

  • Ensure projects comply with Health & Safety legislation, Construction Design and Management (CDM) Regulations and environmental requirements.

  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, sharing knowledge and supporting the development of colleagues where appropriate.









Requirements

Essential



  • Previous experience in project management, civil engineering or a related discipline.

  • Programme and project management experience.

  • Good understanding of project planning, budgeting and risk management principles.

  • Experience working with consultants, contractors and multiple stakeholders.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.

  • Customer-focused with strong stakeholder engagement skills.

  • Working knowledge of Health & Safety legislation and CDM Regulations.

  • Proficient IT skills, including Microsoft Office.

  • Ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.

  • Willingness to travel to project sites and attend occasional meetings outside normal working hours.

Desirable



  • HNC or equivalent qualification in a relevant discipline.

  • Project Management qualification (e.g. PRINCE2 Practitioner or equivalent).

  • Experience using project management software such as Microsoft Project or ASTA.

  • Knowledge of NEC contracts and public sector procurement.

  • Understanding of local government processes and transport infrastructure projects.

  • Commitment to continuous professional development and progression towards professional membership.









Additional Information



  • Location: Office and site-based (travel to project locations as required).

  • Hours: 37 hours per week.

  • Pay: Bi-weekly.
