Job Description:

Role Overview

The Associate Charterer – Optimisation supports the Optimisation Manager and wider chartering team by delivering commercial analysis, market insight, and decision support to enable informed chartering decisions. This is a development-focused role designed to build the technical, analytical, and commercial capabilities required to progress into a more senior chartering position within a technology-enabled environment. The role also provides chartering cover when required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor freight markets, vessel supply/demand dynamics, and oil export forecasts across key regions and trade flows.
  • Support the weekly chartering review, including tracking TCE performance on new fixtures, Expo activity, FFA positions, and P&L impacts.
  • Evaluate voyage opportunities using voyage economics models and analytical tools.
  • Prepare concise market updates, insights, and commercial analyses for senior charterers.
  • Assist with post-fixture reviews and analysis of commercial outcomes.
  • Develop working knowledge of charter party terms, commercial risk exposure, and compliance requirements.
  • Collaborate with operations, optimisation, claims, and other internal teams to understand trade execution.
  • Build and maintain strong professional relationships with shipowners, brokers, and internal stakeholders.
  • Use chartering systems, analytics platforms, and AI-enabled tools to support commercial decision-making.
  • Provide chartering cover as needed to ensure continuity of desk operations.

Essential Education & Experience

  • Experience within bp or a related commercial environment (shipping, trading, logistics, commodities).
  • Degree in economics, finance, engineering, maritime studies, or a related discipline.
  • Strong interest in shipping markets and commercial trading environments.

Essential Skills & Capabilities

  • Strong analytical and numerical skills with commercial awareness.
  • Ability to interpret data and translate it into actionable insights.
  • Sound judgment, attention to detail, and strong risk awareness.
  • Clear and effective written and verbal communication.
  • High learning agility and comfort working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Confidence working with data, systems, and decision-support tools.
  • Strong negotiation skills.
  • Good understanding of Python scripting and intermediate to advanced Excel skills.

Desirable Criteria

  • Exposure to vessel operations, post-fixture processes, or trade execution.
  • Familiarity with freight markets, voyage economics, and charter party concepts.
  • Experience using analytical or optimisation tools.
  • Previous experience in an Expo role.

  • Support other charterers and desks as required, prioritising overall business performance.
