The Opportunity
Our client is a highly regarded building consultancy based in Tonbridge, Kent. They support premium clients - including Harrods and major heritage institutions - across London and the South East with expert surveying, design, and building control services.
As they continue to grow, they are looking for a commercially focused Associate Director to join the leadership team. This is a senior, hands-on role that will suit a Chartered Surveyor with expertise in building control, design compliance, and managing high-quality projects from start to finish.
You will play a critical role in project delivery and the long-term direction of the business, with a clear path to Directorship within 1-2 years.
Duties
- Leading and delivering surveying and building control projects for high-end retail, heritage, and commercial spaces
- Acting as Principal Designer under CDM regulations, ensuring safety and compliance from concept through to handover
- Managing and mentoring junior staff as part of a growing team (currently 6)
- Representing National Building Controls - acting on their behalf and ensuring compliance with evolving legislation (post-Grenfell)
- Liaising directly with clients, contractors, and regulators, providing trusted guidance and direction
- Contributing to operational leadership and the strategic development of the business
- Working on standout projects including a flagship Harrods refit, restoration of listed churches, and luxury retail rollouts across London
Requirements
- Chartered Surveyor (e.g., MRICS, MCABE, MCIOB)
- Strong background in building surveying with additional building control expertise
- In-depth understanding of regulatory frameworks, particularly changes under the Building Safety Act 2022
- Experience acting as Principal Designer and managing compliance under CDM
- Previous leadership or team management experience
- Experience in commercial and private sector projects (e.g. retail, hospitality, heritage) - not just local authority/public sector
- Confident communicator - able to lead meetings, build rapport, and represent the business at senior level
- Full UK driving licence - travel across London and the South East required (mileage paid at 45p/mile)

Package
- £70,000 basic salary
- £4,800 car allowance
- 45p/mile travel expenses
- Office-based in Tonbridge, primarily covering London and the South East
