Job Description - Associate Editor (News)



Your mission


HELLO! magazine is seeking an experienced, sharp, highly-motivated and organised Assistant Editor from a news background.
The ideal candidate will be passionate about entertainment news, royal stories and the international socialite scene, be bursting with agenda-setting news ideas, with a contacts book bursting with the top entertainment PRs and publicists, an impressive track record of landing world exclusives, a keen eye for visually-stunning layouts, is able to tell stories through photos and a flair for writing and editing under pressure and within tight time constraints.
This position requires a strong understanding of celebrity, royal and society news, as well as exceptional editorial skills, art skills and news judgement.
The candidate needs impeccable editorial judgement, will have an eye for breaking news stories, a flair for polished news storytelling, understands what captivates HELLO’s engaged audience and a commitment to upholding HELLO!’s trusted voice and standards.
As Associate Editor, you will oversee all the news coverage, manage the news team to produce high-quality news content, ensuring it aligns with the magazine’s tone, style, and values and be up to date on law.





Key Responsibilities


  • Assist the Editor and Deputy Editor with the editorial planning, production from a news angle
  • Work with the Deputy Editor on the daily content workflow, ensuring news articles are produced on time and meet editorial standards.
  • Encyclopaedic knowledge of entertainment and royal news in the UK and US
  • Improve upon HELLO’s authority and competitive standing in the market through news contacts and exclusive news stories
  • Develop fresh news angles on trending stories to stand out in a competitive media landscape
  • Monitor analytics to guide content strategy and increase audience engagement.
  • Strong, provable, existing relationships with the relevant celebs, PRs, publicists, agents and other industry contacts
  • Regular attendance at entertainment industry events
  • Proven track record of breaking exclusive news stories which appeal to the HELLO! audience
  • Coordinate with writers, the picture desk and other contributors to oversee assigned articles, interviews, and features
  • Has a sharp eye for HELLO!-style newsy and elevated layouts and work closely with the Art Department on visually stunning layouts
  • Write sharp briefs and can edit fast and accurately under pressure and up to date with media law
  • Write sharp, compelling headlines and coverlines
  • Oversee and manage HELLO!’s editorial forward planning calendar, pitching constant ideas for covers, special issues and news stories and news features ahead of time and ensure deadlines are met
  • Source and secure exclusive interviews, news stories and news features which align with the magazine's vision and audience interests
  • Develop and maintain a network of industry contacts to facilitate exclusive content opportunities




Your profile


Strong editorial background in print and digital media brands with experience in commissioning and editing content across multiple platforms.
You need to be connected to the top entertainment PRs and publicists in the UK and the US with examples of your latest exclusive news stories and top contacts across the world of celebrity, TV, film and music.



Experience


  • Proven track record of breaking exclusive news stories which appeal to the HELLO! audience
  • Monitor analytics to guide content strategy and increase audience engagement
  • Confident in working with an art team on magazine design
  • Strong, provable, existing relationships with the relevant celebs, PRs, publicists, agents and other industry contacts
  • Familiarity with SEO best practices and digital news production
  • Experience working with CMS systems and analytics tools
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills
  • A proactive attitude with a passion for storytelling and the ability to generate creative content ideas.




Qualifications


Experience is key but a relevant degree or journalism qualification is desirable.
