Back up driver/operational Support

Role Purpose

To provide reliable back-up driving and operational support to the gas mains replacement teams, ensuring operatives, vehicles, materials, plant, equipment and Signing, Lighting and Guarding (SLG) are available where required to support safe and efficient delivery of the programme.

The role will primarily provide cover where the normal driver is unavailable and will also support day-to-day site and logistical activities when driving cover is not required

Key Responsibilities

* Provide driving cover for gas mains replacement teams as required.

* Deliver, collect and transfer Signing, Lighting and Guarding (SLG) equipment to and from operational work sites.

* Assist with the safe placement, checking and removal of SLG where required and where appropriately trained and authorised.

* Collect, deliver and transfer materials, tools, plant and equipment required by operational teams.

* Support the movement of vehicles and equipment between work sites and the yard.

* Ensure vehicles are operated safely, legally and in accordance with company requirements.

* Complete required daily vehicle checks and immediately report defects, damage or maintenance requirements.

* Maintain vehicles in a clean, safe and serviceable condition.

* Assist site teams with general operational and logistical duties when not undertaking driving activities.

* Support the collection of materials and equipment from suppliers and approved storage locations.

* Help ensure sites have the necessary materials, equipment and SLG available to maintain productivity and minimise avoidable downtime.

* Follow instructions provided by the Yardman, Operations Manager, Site Manager or other authorised member of the management team.

* Comply with the client and SGN safety requirements, site rules and operating procedures at all times.

* Immediately report accidents, incidents, near misses, vehicle damage or safety concerns.

* Maintain a professional standard of behaviour

Skills, Experience and Requirements

* Full UK driving licence appropriate for the vehicles being driven.

* Any additional licence categories or towing entitlement required for the vehicles, trailers or equipment being operated.

* Appropriate NRSWA/Street Works certification for Signing, Lighting and Guarding activities, including the delivery, placement, checking and removal of SLG where required.

* Good driving record and commitment to safe driving.

* Reliable, flexible and able to respond to changing operational requirements.

* Good understanding of basic vehicle safety checks.

* Able to work independently and as part of an operational delivery team.

* Previous experience within utilities, construction, highways or a similar field-based environment is desirable.

* Appropriate safety and site competencies for the activities being undertaken
